Best movie of the decade.

So another decade is ending, and thinking back there have been a shit ton of good movies put out since the year 2000. I think my personal favorite was probably Gangs of New York, because Daniel Day Lewis' version of Bill the Butcher is possibly the best character ever to be fiilmed. He also said things like "I don't give a ten penny fuck about your moral conundrum you meat headed shit sack." That is just good dialogue.

Feel free to list your own. I'm just bored.

It's a tie in for me with "grandma's boy", "shoot em up" and "fido".
I can say that whenever they pop up on cable, you'll find me watching them over again.
Bloody brilliant films.

I like me some Superbad. And Serenity. The LOTR trilogy. There's been decent stuff the last 10 years. But a whole lot more crap. I don't know about best.

LOTR for me hands down. Still, there's plenty of movies that brought some great entertainment; LOTR aside since it's my personal fav of all time, I'd say top five would be: Memento, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Curious case of Benjamin Button, Catch me if you can.
I could probably list X-Men 1&2&3 as well, but then I'd have to argue about Matrix 2&3, Terminators 3&4, Star Wars Ep2&3 and so on, thus let's skip these sequels to the established franchises, since they're usually of inferior quality, albeit very entertaining from a purely brain-dead, somewhat fun'n'laughy point of view.

If you include any of the matrix, terminators or star wars sequels on any list, your opinion is invalid.

I liked Brotherhood Of The Wolf and I will have to agree with fr0g about Gangs Of New York. I do like Spiderwick Chronicles. It was awesome.

thefr0g, that's why I didn't include any of these on the list, just wanted to point out they all represent a similar level and thus you can either include all of them or none. In my case it's none.

I liked Where The WIld Things Are... That was probably one of the most stranges movies I have ever seen.... I took the kids to the cinema to see it on saturday... They loved it!

Whoever thought of that film must have been on a tweak!

Just stumbled on it myself; I've gotta go with the LotR movies. They took fantasy geek mainstream, thus allowing me to impress and/or scare people with my incredibly accurate Gollum impersonation.

No really, Avatar - impressive and fun. Doesn't quite get whole decade though - Matrix then (sequels sucked), and Donnie Darko - though I'm really not sure why...

I'm having a really hard time figuring out why anyone would think that Shoot Em Up is the "best movie of the decade." See Clerks II for my opinion of the LOTR trilogy.

I'd like to imagine that the newest Terminator is a good flick. I've been waiting for that movie since 1991, but after that god-awful third Terminator movie, I'm scared to watch the next. Please tell me it's nothing like the third....

As for my top movie of the decade... 300. I'd say it has everything you could ask for in a movie. It's visually stunning, has some good humor, fight scenes that aren't too over the top, decent sex scene, and it teaches you a little bit about history.

Of the movies named I do most agree with Gangs of New York. That was on my top ten movies ever, and only recently got bumped off.

I wouldn't say it was the best of the 2000-2009 films, though. That credit should go, I believe, to Kung Fu Hustle. This movie had everything; perfect comedic timing, great acting, human characters, unbelievably awesome fight scenes and a beautiful story and moral. Just watch this shit. It's in my personal top three ever made. The only thing I can complain about is that some of the special effects are visibly budget. Oh, and the dub's not very good. Watch the subbed version.

Really? Goes to show how people see different shit in the same movie. I saw kung fu hustle, and enjoyed it, but wouldn't call it amazing cinema. Oh well, at least you have a valid argument and aren't just repeating LOTR like everyone else.

I mean, subjectivity is definitely going to play a role in any pick. We're not all calling by the same metrics. I'm finding as I get older that my favorite movies are ones with a strong humanist theme. Kung Fu Hustle falls into that category, I think; while it recognizes the smallness and pettiness in human nature, the story itself is neither small nor petty. It's hopeful, and aspires to the common good. Even though it's primarily a comedy, I think the theme of redemption throughout is both very real and touching. Kung Fu Hustle isn't a mystery, but it has many of the primal elements Raymond Chandler famously described in The Simple Art of Murder:

Quote:
It is not funny that a man should be killed, but it is sometimes funny that he should be killed for so little, and that his death should be the coin of what we call civilization. All this still is not quite enough.

In everything that can be called art there is a quality of redemption. It may be pure tragedy, if it is high tragedy, and it may be pity and irony, and it may be the raucous laughter of the strong man. But down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid.
