We, on the other hand, are made up of an average of 7*10^27 atoms, so we must be incredibly significant, which is what comparing large numbers next to smaller numbers outside of meaning or context proves, right? Right.

Or, to take the larger view, the Universe must be of middling importance, since the only thing one can compare it's size to (itself) remains constant- the Universe is the size of the Universe. Average significance, nothing more.

Agreed, comparison and perspective are key factors. I doubt an ant is running around right now going "Fuck, this world is so tiny."

Did this guy really join the forum just to post this video? We should have a rule like: 15 posts before you can post videos when your s.n. is the name of your production company and you have no avatar.

He's an angry art student that probably did this to like twenty other forums.

I feel tarnished and used.

I'm wondering about this. I'll move it over to the film and tv board, since it is, in essence, a short.

But i'll leave it here and not delete or anything because it isn't too bad and can provoke good discussion.

To say the earth is tiny is like saying that a pencil is huge, it's all a matter of perspective. A comparison between the earth and the universe does indeed make it tiny, as a pencil would be huge to a bacterium. We are human beings, and to us the earth is not tiny. No man could expect to traverse every inch of land on the earth, and most of the parts on earth (i.e. under the water, under the ground) are completely untouched by humanity. So how could we as human beings consider the earth tiny? Only in perspective with planetary entities and galactic plethoras of fire and rock.

Or put it this way; All physical things in this Universe, including the entirety of the Universe itself, are impossibly tiny next to Graham's Number. Round up every stray quark in the Universe, and Graham's Number can count out each one another Universe's worth of quarks for each sub-particle and not even begin to have tapped it's massive reserve of digits. If you divided Graham's Number by a hundred every second for every minute for every day for every year of your life, you'd die whittling away at a number that was still far too massive to be expressed in place notation.

And yet, what is Graham's Number? A meaningless abstract thought without weight. I can cover it up on my screen right now with a thumb.

First rule of physics. Size, distance, and location are all without functional meaning save in relation to other things.

size seems to be inversely proportinal to importance in physics. The smallest things appear to be the most important in todays study of the physical world.

the fourth dimension is the only one that matters
