Maybe it's because in the US you learn to drive from your family AND at the age of 16 ( if I am not mistaken ) .

Here in Clogland you take lessons with a driving instructor , dual controls .
Usually you need an average of 50 lesson to take the exam and you need to have your theoratical exam passed first . Ohh and you need to be 18 .

The rest is just keep a sane head and drive a lot so you get experience .

But even here it means that some people just can't drive .
One of my most hated things is not signalling .
How do I know if you go left or right ! Just by keeping alert I have been lucky NOT to have had an accident , specially now I drive on the highway more to go see my BF that lives about 1hour 30 min car drive away .

Here, you can get a Rancher's work permit at the age of 14 and drive anything that could be used for working the ranch on the road. Tractors, pickup trucks, ATV's big rigs are all covered. And without a licensed adult along for the ride.

Once you are 16, you can get the learner's permit and that requires a licensed adult over the age of 18 in the vechile.

But even then, if you don't have a license, you can still drive. The police hardly care about such things. And as long as you have a speedometer, headlights, blinkers, and taillights, your vechile is street legal.

There have been a lot of deaths in my family due to driving... My cousin got her neck snapped by the seat belt, other cousin was thrown from the car, my best friend's brother broke his neck... And I was riding when my brother wrecked and my face hit the windshield... Wouldn't you be scared of driving too?

I spent more then 9 years as a paramedic. I've seen more death and blood then I'll ever be able to forget. But, at that same time, I can't let it stop me or I'd never get anywhere in life.

In fact, it turned me into an adrenaline junkie. But like all addictions, I got over that.

It takes time and patience. and lots of practice.

I used to teach flight line driving in an ambulance and always told my students the same thing. Just because the speed limit says 35 doesn't mean you have to go that fast. If the person behind you doesn't like it. It's their problem not yours. They can either learn patience or go around.

Take it no faster then you are comfortable with. There isn't a minimum speed on roads and highways so take your time. Stay off the interstates as those do have a minimum speed.

Wow, that's amazing. I can't even begin to imagine...

..I think in years to come I'll get over all this, I'm still young and without direction...

hey, if I can teach a 20+ kid who had never ridden in a car how to drive. You can learn how. Just patience and time.

As for direction in life. I have always found myself running around in little circles until someone nails down the other foot.

Some moron pulled out of a side road, came across one carriage way and looked like they were going to continue in front of me so I slammed on the brakes. As it happened the car stopped and the guy behind me beeped me like crazy. I dunno what these people are thinking but it's certainly not sense. I mean the guy behind me obviously wanted me to carry on into the other car..

Things like this make me nervous. People can drive perfectly and still get into an accident because some idiot did something stupid while behind the wheel.

very true.

The average driver doesn't look beyond what is immediately in front of him/her. I always tell people to drive like they are invisible and to plan for whatever is at least 12 seconds ahead of them.

Defensive driving is best

which is why you have to assume you are invisible to them. Never trust the other driver and plan out what might happen.

That is also where the slower driving comes into play. Gives you a chance to get used to how they react and gets your mind used to planning out possiblities.

I know it sounds bad but here, if someone goes into the back of you, it's their fault.. they get sued etc so I tend not to worry too much unless it is my fault they crashed into me.

i think it depends with that one, theres been a few times i've nearly went into the back of someones car purely because they've suddenly decided to turn without even bothering to indicate. it's just as well i try to keep about a cars distance between me and the car infront. my main problem with driving is others pulling out infront of me. or people not checking if cars are turning at traffic lights, was nearly in a crash over that the other day, it was green for me to go, and when i started to turn there was no cars for going straight ahead (its their right of way) so i start to turn, then some twat speeding, doesnt bother to check if anyones turning and i nearly go into the side of his car. i had to break (luckily i wasnt going fast) and he had to swerve so i didnt smash him, though we did clip a little, theres a few marks where his fender(??) rubbed against mines. then the twat thinks its a good idea to stop immediatly infront of cars waiting to turn. scariest thing thats happened to me so far. luckily i was just 20 seconds away from my destination so i just went there an had a little panic attack lol.

my driving instructor told me just to asume all other drivers are idiots, an that'll keep you safe..or atleast on the look out.

Yeah.. My instructor said that to me too. Having said that, people make genuine mistakes too. I mean, a simple miscalculation can cause chaos. I just hope I manage to keep my wits about me and avoid any dangerous situations.

yeah that's true..but round my area it's usually just folks being tits to be honest. if they drive a big car they think they own the road. if they have crappy dance blasting out their windows they just think they're better drivers than what they are.

i'm the greatest of drivers but i do try and not cause trouble.

I know folk that are less then 10 minutes drive from my office and can't get a high speed or wireless connection so they have dial-up as their only option.

They average a 14k connection speed.
