Question About Eulogies

Why do they always sing the praises of the person? Even if the world is a much better place without this individual... I can see emphasizing the positive but I wonder why it's always laid so thick how great s/he was, etc.

If you were a total asshole in life, shouldn't the eulogy be rather short instead of all the lies?

Anybody notice that; anybody know why?

Because people aren't always complete cunts and don't want to stand up at a funeral service and talk about the times Bob wanked in the fruit punch.

It's probably also because at a time like that, people are already dealing with uncomfortable feelings of loss and the other things that might come up that weren't resolved with the person correctly are hard to deal with. You know how most people are. It's probably easier to remember the good stuff and let them go instead of having to deal with the bad stuff by themselves.

i've never seen a situation where the person actually deserved their eulogy. curious practice, indeed. although i think the whole coffin, funeral, burial thing pretty retarded in the first place.

We will have burial rituals until we do not exist.

Even if the scientists can extend oru lives soon to a thousand years or more we will still die from accidents and murder.
150K people a day die and only 50K are from accidents and murder the rest are from complications due to aging/and/or disease.
So eulogies and burial rituals will still be with us for a longh long time.

Mostly they are for the living not the dead.
My gravestone will have a saying from a NIN song changed a bit for practical applications---

My moral standing is finally lying down

I'm sorry, but had anyone said ill of my little brother at his funeral, they'd be digging a second hole at the cemetary, regardless of if he was an asshole or not.... its not so much as being nice to the person for how they were in life, but more being respectful of the dead. Especially if they were an asshole, cause who wants some dead son of a bitch haunting your ass.

It's like this. My friend Josh passed away a couple months ago and when I went to the funeral they were talking like he was the happiest person in the world. He really wasn't. He had a real hard life and he was an alcoholic. He was depressed, and what they said about him was really the opposite of what he was really like. People like the idea of a person being better than what they were after they pass. At least that is what I have noticed. They think it will make them feel more better about the death if they believe they lived a real good life and died happy and content. It just is how I have seen it work.
