Egyptian Myth

Can anyone explain some things about some Egyptian myths and aspects of religion to me?

While I understand alot of it, I'm still left confunsed about many things. Like the story of Isis and Osiris. Number one, when did Horus come into the picture and didn't they have another son? Number two, when did the story of Set and his wife start. Number three, if the true Egyptian name for Isis is Au Set, how come Set is also her brother's name? Is his name ALSO a Greek translation?

And I would like to know who really was the head god of Egypt. Sometimes I hear it was Ra, at others Horus (the Sun god this time, not Isis's son), or Ptah. And of course you can't forget Ikhnaton's Aten, where did that come from? These were all gods of the sun.

Then there is the matter of the main goddess of Egypt. Was it the largly popular Hathor, the Northern goddess Nekhebt, or Sounthern Ua Zit (also known as Nut, Net, and Nit). There are accounts of both Hathor and Ua creating the universe and at least Ua putting Ra in charge of the sun.

I don't know, I also heard that the Pharohs themselves were supposed to have been the second son of Isis and Osiris, which is why they was able to keep power.

But then I read that the Egyptians tended to accept different gods and goddesses as their own, even if they already had some one in chanrge of the duty. So essentially they are all the same gods.

So what is right and what is wrong?

The thing about Egyptology...

Over time their gods changed names and new gods were introduced, so unless you set a specific time period then you will have a hard time finding out who was what for where.

Kings and Queens of egypt changed the roles occasionally and early ones were even seen as minor gods by later ones.

I just heard that Isis'a real name in Egyptian is Au Set... Isis is Greek...
So isn't Set also supposed to be the name of their brother?

(I actually figured you could answer that question for me)

Well, Iris is her true name. For Au-Set is the same thing as Au-Set. The reason why we chose that she should be called Iris is because we didn't wan to confuse people.

Set, I am confused, ok? I want answers. This religoin is clearly the most confusing of them all. I know for a fact that Isis is the Greek name for the Egyptian goddess. In fact, the first time I even heard of the Isis Osiris myth I read that it was found in Greece first. I have read in one place only that Au Set was the Egyptian name for her. And I also read that in the earliest found texts, Osiris is not slain by his brother, but by a bore or other such things.

My questioning the myth is not questioning you.

Budda - I am aware of that fact... but it still does not help me... I just kind of wish some one could could give me the earliest known records of each particular deity.

haomdai - I would have to agree with you since I have never read it spelt Iris. But Set could have hit "r" on mistake or he might actually have read something we have no access to at the moment.

Okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!! Let me completly take the first question off the table. How about anyone who knows a good source for information on Egyptain myth or theology just gives the source and easiest way to get a hold of it? That way there are no opinions and no one can get pissed. I'll just figure out what's what on my own, ok?

Truthfully, I really can't answer your question - it may even be that there is no definitive answer if the names and roles became blurred over time. You might find some thing useful here though...

General books/encyclopedias(including 'The Golden Bough'(Thank you Feroluce!)) - http://www.bartleby.com/
There has to be something useful here - http://www.pantheon.org/ (the Encyclopedia Mythica)
A basic list - http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/~shawn/egypt/gods.html
More archaeology based - http://www.egyptology.com/
General mythology links - http://www.mythinglinks.org/

I've always found the Encyclopedia useful, but anyways, that lot should keep you occupied for a while. Good luck!

Most of them were originally Sumerian Gods, Dyshade might have some information readily to hand, failing that you might find something in Here
