I have a refillable lighter with a built in illegal switchblade... fully automatic and long enough to cause some real damage. But its in storage right now, so I don't carry it at the moment.

I find that knives are much more convenient to carry than firearms, expecially when the weather gets warm. The only gun that was as easy to carry as a knife was my old Derringer. The Derringer only had two shots. A blade will never 'run out of ammunition', eh?

Bear in mind that if one is already close, a blade can be very, very fast.

But enough on fighting, I just like knives!

Hehe... I'm in finland it doesn't get warm here its light for 6 months and dark for 6 months.

I have a collection of knives but i have to carry around my bayonet as its army issue so i cant go on duty without it.

I have:

Several customised daggers (all designed especailly for my hand and grip)
My soul sword (a three foot real short sword)
A katana which is mounted on my wall.
Although their not knifes i have 36 real shruiken throwing stars.
Two bayonets, a finnish combat knife (11" blade) , a 7" survival and hunting knife and maybe somemore somewhere.

Alright! Another Veteran!

I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman myself. Spent most of my service time working on Orthopedic wards. Looking back, I wish the navy had put me to sea instead. The travel is the best benefit of military service.

Anyway, did all your custom daggers come from the same bladesmith or did you order from more than one? If more than one, who was your favorite? Does your bladesmith have a website?

Do you have a digital camera so that we can view the custom daggers?

I do not carry my blades with me,since most of 'em are too big.I have an acrylic handled serrated dragon knife. It ain't very good quality on the blade work, but hey it works. Also,I have an old army issue bayonet. It was my fathers. Not too fond of it.Then I have some other knives, all about a foot long, but my favorite carry-on is my wooden boken.I can hit anything with it and don't have to worry about chippin' the blade.Plus,it don't rust and never needs maintence.Chop fuwey!

For everyday pocket knife (a tool, rather than a weapon), I think it is best to buy used at a pawnshop. You will not have spent as much money as buying new, especially if you know how to haggle the sticker price down a bit.

I prefer carbon steel because it is much easier to sharpen than Stainless Steel. A bit of steel wool can be used to remove any rust, then wipe with an oily rag to prevent future rust.

Thus you get a good knife for half cost.

I prefer the good old fashioned katana. A 12"in. cord wrapped handle, 30"in. 420 stainless steel blade w/traditional wave pattern and blood groove...oh hell yeah. That's the way to go for me.

The meatclever I have is a carbon steel Chicage Cutlery model. It is without a doubt the best woodcutting tool I have ever used. It takes a razor edge with ease, and I can chop through branches an inch-and-1/2 thick with one whack.

The newest project I'm working on, I want to make another flail.
I'm going to take a length of chain and thread a steel cable through the links to stiffen it while keeping a high degree of flexibility. I'm going to attatch the chain to a crooked pole about 3 ft long. I don't know what kind of blade I'll use, maybe my bowie knife.
But either way the end result will be a lethal bladed flail.

And Katanas rule. I want to get a Nodachi.

Interesting flail concept,

I got a manrika chain that is basically a chain with two weights on the ends. One can grab both weighted ends to block a slash attack and then wrap the chain around the hand/weapon for restraining the attacker.

It can also be used as a flail by just grabbing one end and swinging the other weighted end.

The manrika chain can be worn so as to look like a person has a chained wallet. Thus one can be discreet while carrying it about town.

On the flail priciple, I am wanting to make a medieval style flail with the spiked ball on the end of the chain. Perhaps even go with more than one spiked ball as they look really neat in much of the fantasy artwork.
Denalay, have you tried making one like this? If so, do you have any tips?

Manrika Chains were originally made in Japan by a famous swordsmith, I love those things. I don't have one of my own but they look extremely cool.

Flails are extremely easy to make. The real difficult part is finding a suitible ball or similar peice of metal to serve as a beater. You don't want something that will shatter into lethal shrapnel if you strike a rock with it. This is definatly the most difficult item to find. I had the incredible luck to find a five pound carbon steel/ iron ball in the backroom of a furniture dealers. I have been told that it was used to hold colonial era windows open.
Antique shops and the like would be a good place to look. A foundry would be ideal if you have such a faculty in your area. A ball bearing would be great. However the connector ring on the ball must be secure and strong so it can take repeated blows without breaking off.
The constuction of the flail itself though is extremely simple.
find a suitible length of steel chain and buy a half split single link connecter that can be purchased at a hardware store. loop both the chain end and the ball through the link and hammer it shut.
For the haft I prefer a length of hollow pipe, simply drill holes in the top of the pipe on both sides. procure a suitible bolt. (Even a nail will work for this component) lower the opposite end of the chain into the hole and slide the bolt throught the last link on the chain and out the other hole. If you've used a nail for a connector it can be easily secured by bending it backwards around the pipe. If you're using a bolt just tighten it in place with a nut.

And that should do it. Be careful when striking a solid object with the flail as the ball will recoil in your general direction. Practice with it often so you can avoid accidently striking yourself with the flail!
To maintain better control I recommend a haft that is approximately as long as the chain itself.
Enjoy!

I do not own a single firearm.... too much of a hassle.. though I live in a state which hands out C.W.P.s' like candy..... I just fancy blades is all.... though I am thinking of buying a gun... and getting a C.W.P. just for fun....

I just love the look of a naked length of steel..... and yes carbon steel is very good.... light.... and razor sharp... yet not very good for sword length combat items as it is very brittle.... but it makes damn good knives.....
