The written word

O.K. So i'm a little tipsy rigth now. Been drinking with my freinds, but still I need some advice, preferably from someone whose experienced with literary publishing.

I've been editing novel NO: 2. The reason is becaause I got some mail. But let's start from the begining. I write novels. I can't get anything published, but one day a guy named Peter Miller, same guy that did "helter Skelter" gets back to me. He says my work is dark and strange, but interesting. So he directs me to an editor. named Lou Aronica. he can't figuer out novel No: 1, it gets rejected, so I send him No: 2. And I pray to Eshu Marabo (haiti stuff, don't worry) and this is what I get.

Faler,

There's a lot of interesting material here, but I think you would need
to do
a considerable amount of work to get this into a form that major
publishers
would find interesting. There are line-editing issues like typos,
overused
words, etc., but fixing that is easy. My bigger concerns involve the
density of the prose (a great deal of description with very little
dialogue), the lack of interaction between the characters, and the lack
of
any real level of redemption at the end of the novel. Commercial
publishers
are very likely to require these things before they would take your
manuscript seriously.

I get the impression, though, that making changes of this sort might not
be
interesting to you. I can certainly respect that and in that case I
think
you should make your best efforts to find a publisher for the novel as
it
currently stands. If I'm wrong and you are interested in making this
novel
much more conventional than it already is, I can give you some further
thoughts and we can try to develop an arrangement to work together.

Regardless, I respect your ambition and wish you the best of luck with
your
work.

Best,
Lou

O.K. O.K., now, don't loose me here. I walk away for a bit, then I realize, it's O.K. to be a bit coomercial, it'll get my foot in the door. So I tell him I'm willing. Then shit hit;s the fan and I'm like "Sorry, I have to go kill a bunch of people in the third world."

And he's like, "no Problem, I'll wait I have other projects."

And I'm like in SOuth America. But I come back, and he's swamped with other projects.

Then he says, wait till September, I can do it then. and I get this:

Alan,

I could definitely get started on this in the next ten days or two weeks.
I
assume we're talking about the second novel. Did we ever discuss fees?

Best,
Lou

Now, I don't know what to do. I've been told any editor, or literary agent asking for money, is a cheat, and I'll only walk away with any empty bank.

But, if he's the person who he claims to be, then I can only wonder if here's my big chance.

Now somebody lend me a hand but please, somebody whose experienced. Anybody here work in the literary industry?

ask him what type of fees he's talking about. if there are excess expenses that you don't need to be paying for but he wants you to, don't do it. but i need some more details here before i can offer any advice.

Do you know who Peter Miller is? His resume is quit impressive. Which makes me suspiciouse. The truth is anybody can set up a website and make claims.

Silverflame,

I'll ask him, and post the results here.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully I won't need to ever get back to Lou Aronica and Peter Miller.

I recieved an accpetance letter from Publish America, but even though they seem to make a point out of them paying me, I still see it as fishy. But I'll definetly try them. I mean, I got over a hundred rejections, I guess eventually one publisher will accept me and not be some kind of scam.

If I find out PublishAmerica is legit, It'll be a dream come true.

Or maybe because of my past I'm being overly cautious.

Yes I know. I originally planned on saving all my rejection notices, but I couldn't put up with the clutter. I could probably wallpaper my barracks room with them.

I just hope it's real. So far I have no reason to believe that it is anything but true, it seems very promising.

Soon, very soon I will return home to Pittsburgh. I'll start a new life as a novelist. I will never again have to deploy to some god foresaken hole and be away from all the things worth fighting for.

anybody who immediately begins asking for money will leave you penniless and without
anything in return...... unless they make an agreement for payment after the royalties start up...

edit it yourself. find a nerd like me whos good on reading and major's in english literature. any one will do. when in doubt go to nearest university and ask a professor for help. if you can find one that would actually help you then your work will usually come out for the better. if you want to do it yourself i would start out asking some basic questions about your work. maybe more along the lines of whats the plot, whos the char. what do they want. how do they feel about things that happen in your story, what do they do about it and so on and so forth, until then. all you have is description and paper. good luck.

I'd have to agree with Dyshade. Fortunatley I was reluctent because it just seemed suspiciouse. But now, I have a legit offer, so far I have no reason to think it's a scam. The people form this company called Publish America, said they want to see my work in print . They gave me an offer via E-mail, I'm just waiting for the contract in the snail mail. They pay me 8% royalties for copy sold. The royalties can ascend to 12.5% if 50,000 copies are sold. I hope I can be that successfull.

And DarkLameth I already have a nerd. She's a manderin chinese linguist, that I found 3 years back in south carolina. She's never social at all, all she ever does is read, and paint. She likes keeping me around because people seem to think I'm a serial killer, (must be the shaved head and full sleeve tattoos) thus I'm very good at scaring her stalkers away.
