The life of a member of the Armed Services

What backgrounds do you all come from? I'm essentially a nerd, grew up in Missouri, primarily a suburb of Kansas City...moved around a lot, always tested high in school, but loathed homework so almost failed a lot of classes, joined the Army recently just to have a stable job and to be able to support a family. Anyone else out there in the Armed Services?

i'm a houngon from the Caribbean, have also lived in Germany though my German tends to limit itself to asking where the station is and buying doughnuts. i was stationed in the Caribbean with the army but was glad to leave military life behind as it becomes too much of a life instead of just a job. i still retain a passionate love of helicopters and Vulcan aircraft though. what are you enjoying most/finding hardest about life in the military so far?

not in it yet, I leave for basic training in 2 weeks. But my job will be a Cryptological Linguist, I plan on learning japanese......that means spending 52 weeks in the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California.....(there ARE worse places to spend a year in than MONTEREY ) But I can't wait for it to begin. I got the 20 grand sign on bonus

Hey this souds like my kind o place!!! I myself served 6 years in the Canadian Army, attianed a rank of Master Corporal, and spent a year with the Canadian Airborne Regiment ( Canadas Special Forces). I did a tour of Duty in Yugoslavia as a UN peacekeeper. I left the military because the Canadian government has nothing but contempt for its armed forces, my last mission had me and my men guarding a pile of fire wood in Quebec durring an Ice Storm, yup thats why I signed up!

I dont regret the time I spent in the Army, I rely on the lessons I learned every day and I hope you enjoy your time, just remeber Basic will fuck with your head, it is supposed to. You're leaving one world and entering another so you have to be reduced to nothing, it is no picnic, I know I was a recruit instructor!!! and one the recriuts hoped not to get.

There seems to be a lot on 'Dark' with a history in the armed forces. Do you think this is coincidence?

Soldiers are known for their "black sence of humour" . Most guys in my unit were punks or metalers and dating goth girls

Yeah cool, I'd have thought the life styles really different, obviously they compliment eachother in some way.

actually i seem to be an oddity over here...everybody else seems to embrace popular culture...most of the young ppl here are either in the hip-hop crowd or are preppies...theres a few ppl representing underground subcultures, but they are few and far between...i've found maybe 2 or 3 "darklings" such as myself among the ranks, as well as a few raver types....but most of the time i end up with pop culture thrown in my face....*grumbles*

How long are you meant to be stationed there? Are you an oddity in the ranks or an oddity for the civillians?
