How on earth does Cricket work, anyway?

well... 22 men spend 5 days standing in a field and the team that drinks the most tea wins.

I've always wondered this myself.

Cricket is one of the finest sports in the world. No other game can remain interesting for five days. Cricket frequently manages it. I think it's because there is so much scope for variation. You do need to be fairly in-the-know to get the very most out of it, but if you start off by watching a one-day match, or a Twenty20 match, which is even shorter, then they're much more accessable and you can get into it and learn all about it that way.

These truly are halcion days for English cricket - regaining the Ashes, putting a serious dent in the Australian claims to being the best team in the world. But most of all, we now have a team which does not capitulate at the drop of a hat. Roll on the next series in Pakistan - if it goes ahead that is...
