Any vegetarians here?
For how long?

(I'm a former vegetarian; I currently eat chicken for dietary issues, but will soon go back to vegetarianism).

its a way of life, not a philosophy... argue the reasoing behind the action taken, not the action itself... this is not the Vegan hotline

I think that it is a philosophical subject. Because if you debat the moral issues you might want to debat the right of animals as well.
Especially if you think that pain is a importent moral factor(pain is here used in a very lose term) and if 2 humans are in pain and that pain is equal in size(or whatever you call it) then you have to take equal care for both.(hope i made myself a bit clear......)

But errantrogue would you mind explaining a bit?

And btw your argument could sound like this philosophy is a way of life and that is why it is not philosophy.....

Acid Dream why do you feel guilt when you eat the animals. I don't think that you feel that much guilt because if you did you would stop.......

I love vegetables...especially vegetables made from pork....mmmm, pork....I don't think I have gone without meat one day in the last 10 years or so. If someone can actually make a vegetable substitute that really tastes like a juicy, rare, grilled steak, then I might think about it.

My only problems have been lack of protein and vitamin B12.

I hate beans. I dislike peanuts (they dry out my mouth; I sing a lot; also dislike milk for the phlegm problem).

I've always loved fruits of all kinds (except grapefruit... it's edible... but I hate bitter tastes). I could live off of juices and fruits if they had the nutrients I need.

I've proven to myself that I can live off of bread for a week. I've proven to myself that I can live off of white rice for a week (both had two reasons; prove to myself, and low on cash ).

I've had no problems with "missing" meat. I need to take vitamin supplements, but I've always had this unnatural fear of medicines and the such (aside from required shots, 21 months since taking medicine).

Why is it that when a animal is deadly ill that we go with assisted suicide?
And when a human is deadly ill we try to keep them alive as long as posible?

The question here is why should we not take animals pain as serious as humans pain?

i only eat chicken, turkey, shrimp, and salmon.
i don't eat red meat of any sort. but my parents occassionally give me some cause i need meat on my body.

I was one for four and a half years..... my Dad has been one for almost forty years and at 64 the advantages of a non meat diet are quite apparent...... if I compare my Father to another individual of the same age he looks almost twenty years younger... and he can outrun me.... so I am thinking about beginning another veggie based diet.... yet you do need to supplement your diet with vitamins and protien.... so either lots o' beans or pills.....

Oh.... Errant a Vegan is much different than a Vegetarian.... a Vegan will not consume any dairy products whilst a vegetarian will....

yea, i was born anemic but didnt know of it until about a year aho b/c it wasnt apparent until i cute out the meat, im still a veggitarian but i take suppliments and keep a healthy diet, but i dont think the smoking helps much.

vegetarian for the past 12 years, vegan for past seven years, all for ethical reasons. No vitamin supplements necessary.

and I'm quite happy to avoid the mindless stereotype of meat eaters as "heartless murderers" so long as I don't get mindlessly stereotyped as a vegan nazi.

On to the philosophy bit:

Blame it on religous dogma and morality that only serves the living and not the soon to be dead." - there's definitely a contradiction in the attitude that says that people have got to keep suffering, whereas animals can be put out of their misery with a painless injection. You got it spot on - the current dogma and morality does indeed serve the living rather than the person suffering.

But, that's about the only time society (in general) thinks of an animal's pain and actually deals with it with any compassion.
