| is there a 'soul', and what is it like? -
11-11-01
ok, guy_person's thread has gotten me thinking now.......
this is what i posted in response to his question/poll as to where emotions come from.... Quote: |
i think emotions are a product of both the mind (thoughts) and the body (chemicals released in response to thoughts) (though the fact that the chemicals are released as a result of the thoughts could mean that they are only a product of the mind....hmmmm), as i'm not sure i believe in the concept of a soul. a body has a certain, fluctuating, amount of electro-chemical energy, but i'm not entirely convinced that it can be construed as anything as spiritual as a soul. don't get me wrong, i would love to be able to believe in a soul because it would mean that we are more than just the sum of our bodily parts, but i'm just not sure i can, but i do like to think it's a possibility.
| this is how i followed on in my head.......
if i did believe in a soul, however, i think my view of it would be as an unchanging basic element of us.....something that, however we may change throughout our lives, it will not, it remains constant. i don't know if i can even explain to myself, let alone anyone else, why i think this, but there it is. if there is a soul for each of us - though the thought of one big soul for us all is rather nice - then perhaps we reside inside the soul, rather than it residing within us, sort of like - and ya, i know this is a strange analogy - a snail in it's shell, or even better, a hermit crab in a shell, because a snail's shell grows with it - and if i'm to believe in a constant soul that wouldn't work - but a hermit crab merely shucks off the shell once it has grown too big for it. could we, when we die, shuck off the soul to leave it to be inhabited by another body, rather than leave the body behind?
so, basically, i'm wondering (if the word 'basically' even applies after i've rambled on for so long) if we each have a soul, as in some form of energy/other thing inside of us, or are we inside a soul? or is there one big soul for all of us that is inside each of us? or one big soul that we are all inside? and do they last forever? or only until their person dies?
also, is a soul a personal thing, every one different, specific to the person it inhabits/is inhabited by? or is every one the same, a sort of 'one-size-fits-all'?
i'd love to hear what y'all think about this, yes, even to tell me that i'm a lunatic.........but seriously, tell me if you think you/everyone have/has one, and what you think it's like; shape, size, smell, longevity, colour, texture, ANYTHING! etc. I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

Of course.Thats like asking if we breathe air. The soul is what makes us up. Its our personality, its what distinguishs a person from every one else in the world. All of our fears, and memories, and sadness is our soul. When someone dies, the soul is knocked out of the body, due to the bodies collapse. thats how THE HUMAN BODY dies. but we never die. DEATH is hardcore evidence that we have a soul. When the body ceases to function, we leave that shell, and either go into another one or journey to our paradise, or punishment. The soul occupies the brain.
Think of the human brain as a battery, and the energy it lives off of, is our soul.

This should have been a poll...
I too believe that every soul is separate and individual, and that there are souls that will always meet...no matter what because they learn and grow from that being...be it pleasant or not. I agree that is more of an energy, something that encompasses a "beign" and it grows or dies from the energies it gathers from those it mingles with... Does the soul exist? Does it go to heaven or hell? Questions I could never really answer, and never caught my attention until recently. A friend of mine, a lady, told me of her being a medium. She did bring me into contact with my deceased grandfather, mother's side.
But the strange thing... She was on the other side of the atlantic, the whole time. I had never even told her of the existance of that man... Let alone the small trivialities, his personal traits... I do believe it was he.
It leaves me to question my firm beliefs in technology, and the finity of the soul. It also forces me to question an afterlife... For heaven is beyond our reach. And he, was not beyond her.
I am still contemplating, trying to formulate a new theory. My logical mind will not have any beliefs founded upon simple assumptions. But the latter events were a little firmer proof then what I ever heared... I can not any longer defend my beliefs, that the soul be finite. If the soul lives on, here, on earth, but beyond our sight, then in another dimension most likely. I must think more of this... I would welcome theories. ... Time has no bearing... ...when the whiteout begins...
Don't come after me... | | |

yeah, i did think of doing it as a poll but i just had too many questions/variables/possible answers; i couldn't do just a few coz one of my pet hates is multiple choice questions that don't have the answer i would choose. : )
i like the idea of it drawing energy from those it mingles with, that it can learn. I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

I`m glad I`m not the only one questioning its existance. Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so.

In fact, there are even some beliefs that before your sent to earth, you already have been happily wed to your husband/wife already for quite some time. Hence soul mates. Its all up to you, to find them again on earth. That belief has also been played out many times in movies,or books, etc.maybe we were all spirit's assigned to a body, just as a guide is assigned to a human. We already have our personality intact in our soul, but we're just sent down to earth to occupy a body, and well...live life. Why? i have no idea.
Rest assure. IF a person can die.we have a soul.because the soul is the life essence, its not in the body anymore,if it were, the body would'ent be dead in the first place. The soul travels on.

Many months ago I tried to argue for the soul's existence with the last heathen, and had a really hard time simply because it was so hard to even define. Try it. I think if anyone can really define it well, then they have a starting point at least. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

in my opinion it is energy, pure, complex energy that retains experiences and it can be reformatted(yes I work with technology)as often as it needs until it becomes so pure that it ascends...to wherever perfect little energies go... i'd like to believe there is a soul, and living through life, it's hard to believe that there we are merely bodies going through the motions in life [at times anyway]. but if the soul indeed exists, i think that everyone would have one - even animals, and i don't think that it would have a definitive shape, size, smell, colour [hey you spell it the way i do!] or texture because these are all attributes of the physical world.
i haven't read all the other posts, just skimmed over them, but i do believe that the soul would have an element of induvidualness [is that even a word?] to it, but they would all be grounded in a common link. probably their origin - some like to call it god, or an energy source.
and with the idea of reincarnation, a novel idea itself - it's a form of immortality isn't it? or living longer than what we know anyway. although there is reputed "proof" of reincarnation, i don't believe it. like most things, to me, it's all wishful thinking. have you seen my marbles?

| Here's a wild assumption. What if we, loop in lives, and body form, until a soul has fulfilled,or correctly lived thier life as they were put on earth to do? It could be an effective hypothesis. | |

What if our bodies are just incubation vessels for a soul, keeping it safe and nourishing it until it's ready to leave?

There are many things we have yet to learn, and the unfiltered soul is just too beautiful for us to begin with, people would end up abusing its power, and wasting energy, turning to the dark side too soon, and waste thier existance in the universe.
Life is all a test, and during this test, we are all challenged, and taught, so that we learn that our soul's are too precious to waste, and make good of the "afterlife".

yes, it is comforting to think that death doesn't just mean stopping, and i would like to believe that there is more, but on the other hand, the scientific part of my mind sees the sense in death being a complete end........decay, dessication of the flesh; these things seem almost too real sometimes, and make it hard for me to believe that anything else has happened to the creature that it used to be other than all the organs and systems winding down and stopping.
i suppose i have so much wonder at life itself, the fact that it exists, its intricacies, the incredible feat of engineering that is the human body (though if we are talking souls i don't disclude animals, in fact, if there are souls, i think the purest ones belong to creatures other than humans), all its wonderful variety, that i can almost think of having a chance to be alive at all as such a monumental miracle that there doesn't need to be anything else. I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

| Our souls.... -
11-13-01
I know that everyone says that our souls make up who we are, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and disagree.
Saying that we are shaped to our soul is rather a defeatest way of looking at things: It means that we can't change who we are, no matter how hard we try.
And I can't believe that.
We are who we have learned to be....
What makes us who we are?
I believe it's our fears, dreams, loves, hates...none of which is shaped by our souls, but by our memories.
And it is our last memory that we have, guilty or not, which makes US decide whether or not we should go to heaven or hell...
...Which might explain why our 'life flashes before our eyes before we die'.
As for the Soulmates thing...I'm a bit of a romantic...and I believe that that might be true...but it doesn't mean we will be destined to meet our soulmate...we have to search for them. And there is no guarantee that we will find them, but maybe if we're lucky.... I don't want to be remembered...
