Socialist party wins Spanish election (by the looks of it) - 03-14-04

Quote:
Spain's ruling Popular Party has admitted an unexpected defeat in the country's general election with almost all the votes counted.
The Socialists won 43% of the vote while the centre-right Popular Party has garnered 38%, reports say.

The poll has been clouded by claims that al-Qaeda carried out the Madrid bomb attacks that killed 200 people.

Officials say 63% of the electorate turned out to vote in the poll which ends eight years of conservative rule...

Apparently, although Spain backed the US invasion of Iraq, 90% of the Spanish people opposed it - is this the first of the government casualties to fall because they sided with the invasion against the will of their people?

I don't think that the UK's Labour party will lose the next general election here, but I'm pretty sure their majority was be severly diminished. It'll be interesting to watch elections in other countries where the government has similarly ignored the wishes of the electorate.

makes a nice comparison with the iranian elections where the government has ignored the wishes of the electorate.

dunno much about the spanish government, but the whole bumbling of the ETA al quaeda question made them look like fucktards, which is gonna cost you votes in true democracy

Yes, and the bombings made people want to vote (and apparently a high turnout in Spain usually favours the left, or so I read on the BC site somewhere)

Euro-socialists = submissive wimps.

This was a big victory for Al Qaida in Spain.

I think it's a good idea that an administration that performed an action in direct defiance of 90% of its population was overthrown.

I think the bombings are a travesty, and I hope the reason for overthrowing the administration was not to acquiesce to the terrorists.

dunno the reasons why spain voted as it did
the problem will be if the terrorists reach the conclusion that bombings can blackmail democracies into inaction. it'll probably work in europe
their take on the results of 9/11 indicates to me that al qaeda really doesn't understand the difference between americans and europeans
if they try a similar attack to influence america's election they'll give the republicans a landslide

Obviously that's an ill-informed view of what's happening in Spain, mixed with a double helping of far-right-wing extremist propaganda.

Spain has already said it will continue to fight terrorism - after all, like the UK and many other countries in Europe, they've been fighting terrorism for decades.

However the new Spanish government has the intelligence to see the difference between fighting terrorism and invading Iraq.

Maybe they wanted a change, and as such voted toward that end?

(Because that was Al Qaeda's stated aim doesn't mean that's why the administration was voted out. There was that little thing of discontent with the decision to go to war that was independent of the bombing).

Or, as a former poster mentioned, the bombings took more people to the polls, and in Spain, a higher turnout favors the left?

In fact, I believe this is the problem with liberals. The right is gung-ho. The left isn't nearly as much. I'm hoping Bushy's screwups = high turnout.

Wow, that statement was totally devoid of any intellectual offering.

Grow up.
