School board: No credit for Hooters work

SAVANNAH, Georgia (AP) -- A 17-year-old high school senior working at a Hooters won't get class credit for her job because the restaurant, known for its waitresses in tight T-shirts and hot pants, is too racy, school district officials decided Thursday.

Laura Williams wanted her hostess job, for which she wears long pants and a collared shirt, to count as part of a work-study program that lets students leave school early so they can work for vocational course credit.

Williams plans to keep the job and give up the credit.

She and her father had asked the school board to overrule the school superintendent's decision that Hooters is an inappropriate workplace for the Effingham County High School program.

All five members of the county school board voted down the restaurant.

"I know we live in a world of Britney Spears, but I don't see us giving school credit in that atmosphere," said school board member Vera Jones.

"It doesn't matter what decision they make," Williams said Thursday. "I plan on staying there. It's just a fun place to work."

Williams' father, Larry Williams, said he's considering a lawsuit against the school system.

Aaron Sharp, manager of the Savannah Hooters, has said the school superintendent overreacted. He said his restaurant strives for a family atmosphere that includes balloons for children and a kids' menu.

Vocational education programs at the high school allow students to leave the campus early each day to work at retail, administrative, service and other jobs. Students earn credits for the courses based on their supervisors' evaluations of their work ethic and performance.

Georgia. I've been there a couple times. Christian dominate thinking runs rampant. It's a very scary place.

A simple act, of taking off my shirt, and jacket, and jumping into a swimming pool, in December got me stared at like I have five heads. When I walked into the hotel soaking wet, old peope looked at me and nodded theid heads negatively.

We asked an adult gas station attendant how to get back to the freeway, and she said "What's a freeway, is that the big road?"

I could tell you more stories, but I'm sure there's peope out there with much better ones.

You don't nod your head negatively, you shake it. Nodding is an accepting or affirmation.

As for this story, I think it's idiotic as in that I think most of the stuff occuring in George is idiotic. The fact is that she's working, she's not showing off her breasts or acting like a bimbo, and the environment of the workplace is not aimed to be raunchy(I think that's what you meant instead of racy), but rather more toward the family.

It's the name..Hooters. People hear that and think it's some sort of strip joint mixed with a restaurant.

Admittedly Hooters is not that bad. And the fact that she has parental consent to work there is important. But so long as not a single other person in that school is getting school credit for working at any other slightly "suggestive" buisness then I suppose there really is no problem with them telling her she can not get credit for working there. It's silly, but as long as it's something handled fairly then there shouldn't really be a problem. And it's not as if they were trying to force to her to quit the job completely, which was something I was worried about when I first heard this on the radio.

I don't really understnd how this whole credit thing works, but isn't it meant to be in some way vocational and useful? If so then I wouldn't give credit for any waitressing job, because you don't learn a great deal.
