Saddam and the US - the Love Affair... - 02-21-04

Its amazing how many people are ignorant of the once 'love-affair' between the US and Saddam...

Saddam Hussein: Honorary citizen of Detroit, Michigan

Years before Saddam Hussein became an enemy to the United States, he was reportedly seen as a friend and made an honorary Detroit citizen.

In 1980 when Saddam Hussein was on good terms with America, he was quite the giver. Hussein donated money to help several churches in the motor city, Detroit.

There are pictures of a meeting between a Detroit priest and Saddam Hussein when he accepted the donation.

Father Jacob Yasso of the Sacred Heart Chaldean Church says, "He said, 'We hear you have a debt on your church'. I said, 'Yes Mr. President'. He said, 'How much?'. I said '$170,000'. He said, 'I'll pay it off for you'."

Father Yasso returned the favor at that same meeting 23 years ago. He gave Hussein a key to the city of Detroit making him an honorary citizen.

I can't believe that there is anyone left on the planet who is ignorant about the links between Saddam and the US in the 1980s.

It was no different than when the US supported Stalin in WWII.

It was necessary at the time. In WWII, we were fighting the Axis powers and it was beneficial for the Western powers to support Stalin. In the middle east, the Islamic fundamentalists had established an Islamic republic in Iran. Saddam invaded Iran and it was beneficial for US to support him at the time.

Alliances such as these are only temporary. Both Stalin and Saddam had to be dealt with at a later time.

Yes, however his whole reign of tyranny was funded by the US (the Regan Administration I beleive) And Bin Laden was all the same.

The US poltical cicuit shouldn't be so outraged when the dog they abused (USed for their own ends and then dumped upon when they became a liability0 suddenly turns around and bites their rears.

The US supported the mujahadeen in Afghanistan. But show me where the US supported Osama bin Ladin.

Really it was the Saudi's that supported Osama bin Ladin. Much of that was to get the religious fanatics out of their country and into Afghanistan where they could do a bit of good by getting themselves killed while making things miserable for the Soviet Red Army.

The US strategy has been to turn our enemies against each other. Looking at history, this strategy has been good overall. The Soviets took Berlin 1945 and then we were able to contain communism through much of the Cold War. Their system inevitably collapsed.
Now we are fighting the Islamic religious fanatics. This war is nowhere near as destructive as one fighting the Soviets head on would have been.

There were many factions of the mujahadeen. The US did not support Osama bin Ladin.

Maybe not directly, but they trained him and his cell/faction and gave him support and arms and even taught him the arts of Guerilla and terrorist warfare

I know that the US gov't did not like Osama bin Ladin back in the 1980's. Remember when LtCol. Oliver North explained to congress why he had that security system built around his home? He named Osama bin Ladin as having made death threats against him.

Yes, the US supported the mujahadeen in Afghanistan. But there were many factions and No, the US did not support Osama bin Ladin.

They funded and trained him, what more do you need for it to count as 'support'?
