Phobias...it's my understanding that phobias are believed to be illogical fears. I don't think that is entirely true. I can see where one might have arachnophobia if they'd had an unpleasant encounter with a spider as a child. Or, clausterphobia if trapped in a small space at some point (for me, I got locked in a closet as child by accident by a friend). Of course, maybe I'm reading too much into the lablel of "illogical". I know that a closet won't hurt me, and a closed space won't truly hurt me, but I think it's logical that I'd be afraid considering I had a bad experience as a kid....blah blah blah... Anyone care to put a different spin on this, or share reasons for any phobias?

they are irrational because they do no reflect the true nature or danger of the situation... they are based purely on confusion and discomfort that has happened in the past, not the reality of the new event...

you know, the other day i was wearing an ICP shirt and my friend, who is deathly afraid of clowns, almost flipped out and refused to look at me unless i changed....later she said something i though was rather interesting, she said that she does not quite understand why she is afraid of clowns, yet she feels she must be afraid of clowns.....

but they are in the same vein... once is just stricter than the other...

You know the sensation of dread takes people by surprise. Fear isn't always a measurable thing. I've never been afraid of heights, until go up to the top of a ski lodge one and looking down the center of the building. Perhaps it was just a different experience or maybe I felt uncomfortable with the cleaning staff pushing a cart behind me. Still I now have the fear of heights. It isn't enough to make it interfer with my life. The big thing is not confronting fear. It grows and overtakes the mind making it illogical.

Phobias...I have a lot of them. I find that phobias are created by a feeling of discomfort or not belonging. I was never afraid of the dark, I mean, I was one of those children that hated light just about. Then one night I was in a drak room, and I started thinking. What could be in here? No one else was around, and I had time to be afraid. I knew no one was going to kill me, but somehow I felt that I couldn't NOT believe it. It happens to other people right? So it's not really because I'm afraid of the dark, I'm afraid of what is hiding in the dark.
