Mercy Killing Mom a Free Woman
The 64-year-old woman who shot her two terminally ill sons to death walked
out of prison as a free woman at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
Carol Carr, who served 22 months of her 5-year prison sentence, was paroled
by the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles in early February. She
pleaded guilty to two counts of assisted suicide just over one year ago.
"I think Pardons and Paroles reached absolutely the correct decision to, you
know, it's time to end Carol's suffering as well and let her live the rest
of her life," said her attorney, Lee Sexton.
Carr was welcomed back into society by three women who waited outside of the
prison, holding a banner reading "We Love 'U' Carol!"
"These are tears of joy. We're just glad she's on her way home, gonna get to
be with her son and her granddaughter and the rest of her family," said one
of the women.
On June 8, 2002, Carr shot her sons -- 42-year-old Michael Randy Scott and
41-year-old Andy Byron Scott -- at their rooms in a Griffin Nursing Home.
Carr pleaded guilty to both shootings, saying she could no longer bear to
see her sons suffer from Huntington's disease, a degenerative and hereditary
illness.
Carr was set to be released in March -- the earliest possible date under
Georgia law, said Heather Hedrick, spokeswoman for the state Board of
Prisons and Paroles.
"Carol Carr has punished herself more than the prison system will ever be
able to punish her," said parole board member Mike Light.
Spalding County prosecutors were comfortable with the board's decision to
parole Carr, Hedrick said.
The only condition on Carr's parole is that she may not reside with her
remaining son who suffers from the early stages of Huntington's disease.
Carr also cannot serve as his primary caregiver, parole board members said.
Instead, Carr will live with her ex-husband, Charles.

Aren't there more humane ways of euthanasia? When you see a half squished ant.. you step on it because there is no recovery and its in pain.. I know you can't compare an ant with a human..
She did take care of them for 42 years... which means she did love them enough.. to raise them...
I hope I'm never put into such a situation to decide..
Well...personally, I don't agree with 'mercy killing.' I do, however, agree with euthanasia. Keep in mind they are two totally different issues. Two totally different definitions.
And yes, there are more humane ways, definitely. Over medicating is probably one of the best.
Whatever the case, these men were not cognitive enough to let her know that they wanted to die. So she took things in her own hands, which might not have been what they wanted. We'll never know.
Physician assisted suicide and euthanasia, though--it should be legal in every state, not just Ohio, IMO.

well i am for the euthanasia if there is no other hope of recovery... as for the mercy killing... well if they were in no state of stating their wishes... and no hope of them coming back even long enough to say kill me ... then i can understand her reasons for it....
but i agree with garg whole heartedly in that i hope to never be in that situation
There is no Joy greater than soaring high on the wings of your dreams, EXCEPT mabey the joy of watching a Dreamer who has no where to land but in the Ocean of Reality!
Alone together. It was all two people could ever be to each other, Alone. Together. For the dreams and secrets of our hearts may be spoken, but words are poor handmaidens. Wordes can never fully say what we want them to say, for they fumble, stammer, and break the best porcelain. The best one can hope for is to find along the way someone to share the path, content to walk in silence, for the heart communes best when it does not try to speak... from the book "Dragons of a Lost Star
I don't think that euthanasia is justified unless the victim is consentual.
i would agree with that statement.... but what if they are brain dead or in such pain that they are in a constant drug induced coma where they can not even request and end....

Um...it doesn't mention whether or not they actually asked her to do it or not. Surely if they didn't, however 'humane' she thought she was being, it was still murder?
Actually a shot in the head can be one of the quickest ways to die- it just seems gruesome and violent (and of course if it should ever fail to kill).
I am also really torn on this- I wonder how long they had been in pain: 2 years, 5 years, 10 years? There isn't one answer for situations like these, you'd really have to look at the circumstances.
