If you are directly providing an influence be it positive or negative; it is a form of control. When someone joins a cult there are influenced by words or spiritual rewards which lead them into the same referance of thought. Why do you think that a preacher preaches, a reverand holds sermons; words are very powerful and provide more control than you could imagine.
