Islam is meant to be a largely peaceful and uniting religion. It united the old multitudes of Arabian tribes. But the Arabian culture, with the slim possibility of the Ottoman Emperors, is extremely militant. That's the damned thing. There's nothing in the Koran about keeping a beard or covering women, it's in the culture.
Similarly, when Christianity replaced Mithraism as the dominant religion of the Roman Empire, it was largely adapted to it, in part because they are pretty damnably similar. But because fo this, we only started discovering the real message of Christianity a couple of centuries ago.
