Well, he was arrested by people working for the High Priests of the Jewish people. That would be a pretty good indication.
Here are a couple biblical quotes that show his attitude toward the religious establishment of his time:
"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess." Matthew 23:25 (This is just a part of a tirade that takes up most of this chapter.)
"And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." Matthew 21:12-13
Its small wonder that between his outbursts and the huge amount of people that began flocking to him, that the priests wanted him out of the way. Additionally, the Roman occupation were usually very tolerant of local religions as long as they didn't stir up trouble. They were probably afraid of Roman repercussions as well.
