| "Imagine No Religion" sign sparks controversy -

Quote:
Vernon (WTNH) _ A sign posted by Atheists in the Rockville's Central Park has people talking, prompting calls to the town hall and the local clergy.
The Connecticut Valley Atheists posted the three-sided sign, which some call a billboard, and it was the only sign in the town center marking the Holiday season. Two sides of the display feature the Twin Towers, framed by the words "Imagine No Religion."
This Christmas, Martha Chennelle and Amy Houser say Vernon could use a few prayers, considering the sign standing in front of town hall.
"We believe that Christ is the reason for Christmas," said Chennelle.
"I feel like this is an attack on my beliefs as a religious person," said Houser.
Houser says the sign mocks her religion during a holy time of the year. "Imagine no religion is an attack against me, as any person of faith should take it as an attack against them," Houser said.
The town issued permits to the Atheist group to put the sign in the park. They also issued permits to a group of churches that plans to put a nativity scene and to a local synagogue to put up a menorah.
Himes also says that the picture of the Twin Towers is meant to show that without religion, 9-11 wouldn't have happened. A suggestion that has upset Muslims, as well.
"This is an attack," said Houser.
Chennelle and Houser have been fighting back with prayer.
"We ultimately believe that Christians have been persecuted throughout history," said Houser, "so this is nothing new."
According to the Hartford Courant town officials issued the Atheists a permit to put up the sign to commemorate the Winter Solstice. Permits were also issued to local churches and a synagogue to put up their own displays.
Yesterday the town of Rockville put up a large Christmas Tree, just 10 feet from the display.

Persecution? Way to water down all the persecutions that Christians actually have had to suffer because of their beliefs. Isn't fighting a three word sign and trying to get it removed persecution of non-Christians? If a Christian person puts up a nativity scene then is it an attack on other religions?
Though the poster doesn't make sense either. Religion was part of that attack but it was not the cause. If there existed no religion in the world then I'm sure similar acts of terrorism would exist as well.

They should put a sign up next to it that says "imagine no religion" then have pictures of Soviet gulags and Nazi death camps.

Twin towers, first of all, wasn't caused by religion. Rather it stemmed from politics and economical problems (well economical problems is a misunderstatement).. if we really want to go back to dates, we can say it went back to the British Mandate and French colonization of the Middle East.
Second of all, I am all for expressing your opinion but I'm all for respect. And I kind of find it rude to be putting up signs like that when Christmas is near, Hannukah already started, and Eid is coming up.
I have no idea what kind of message that poster is trying to convey, is it that the world is supposable a better place without religion? Well that's not exactly true.

I was referring to the limp atheist faggots who are putting this bullshit up in the Christmas season to ruin other peoples good times. What reason could they have to do it other than in the name of atheism? Whatever would we do without you fanatics indeed.

in my opinion, it's sort of hypocritical from a group that pushes for religious signs, billboards and the ten commandments that have been posted before they were even born to be removed decrying offensive...are now using the same tactics they whine about, with something that offends non believers and believers alike?
i'm not offended they think the world would be better off without religion, i'm offended that they chose a rather, emotional subject to promote their hatred, it's not like a man and woman staring at a child is offensive and if it is, i'd hate to see what sort of parents they are, even as a witch i wasn't irritated by religious propaganda around the holidays...
they're just like the little old man that complains about our adult erotic entertainment movie room, but goes in there weekly to see that everything is on the up and up, taking his sweet time to see exactly what we're renting. Atheism is a religion. And they guard their beliefs with fanaticism and try to force others to convert to it.
What they refuse to acknowledge is that the constitution guarantees freedom OF religion. Not freedom FROM religion. Pain is Nature's way of saying "At least your still alive!"

I'm pretty much an atheist, and I love the christmas season. I think signs like that are rude and in very poor taste.
I also think they have every right to put up those rude, tasteless signs.

It seems like all different groups have done something or other to offend the opposing side at some time or another, so what's the big surprise there? It's all ever just been a battle of "our way is right and your way is wrong". It's a shame most of the world has seems to always be so polarized. Yeah a Christmas Tree and a Menorah are not equal to a sign claiming that religion kills people and is evil through innuendo. Mmmkay?

How do 3 words insinuate that religion kills people and is evil?
"Imagine no religion."
Seems to me that's a pretty open-ended hypothetical that could allow the mind to go a variety of different ways. The fact that Athiests put it up shouldn't enter into the argument. Think of it more as a message challenging you to explore possibilities outside of what you may have been taught is the right thing. Billy, you're getting as hyper-sensitive as the Muslims these days. I saw billboards all the time with questions like "Where are you going?" and signed by God. As a non-Christian, they don't bother me. I'm not so narrow-minded as to believe everyone should think exactly like I do.
And after typing all that, I realize there is no point in entering into discussions with Billy. Ah well. I'll hit post reply anyway. See where it goes. In Memory of the Busby Babes :

It goes into a spiral argument that only declines into personal attacks and hurt feel-bads.
The point is, that poster was intended to equate all religion as bad. Although they don't feel their humanist religion is equated as such.
People are no longer taught respect for others in our society and that is how we get such offensive displays in public. Pain is Nature's way of saying "At least your still alive!"

3 words and a picture of the World Trade Center. Thats how.
Not very open ended unless you're into cognitive dissonance.
I would like to see how all the assholes would react if there was a sign that "imagine no hatred for life" and there was a picture of Darwin. Would that offend you?

I'm not so easily offended by other people's opinions. To be offended, I would have to give a rat shit about other people's opinions. You spend too much time being offended. You're basically a Muslim. In Memory of the Busby Babes :
