SAN DIEGO - A man who spent nearly 21 years in prison for a toddler’s death, now believed to have been an accident, was awarded $756,900 by a state compensation board — $100 for every day he spent in prison.

I think he deserved at least that much.. But then again, the gov. will probably tax the shite outta it..

That's 36K a year. I reckon that's about what he would have made had he been working. And the money SHOULD be taxed.

He'd get a lot more sympathy from me if he wasn't exploring conspiracy theories and suing for $50 million. I'm not, in good conscience, going to say he deserves more than 756K if he's about to score millions.

He's lucky he got anything really, i didn't think most people got compensated for that.

Everybody gets compensated for this. Every few years a case like this will appear in the news. There were a bunch of them in the early 90s when DNA testing was first used on the evidence from old rape cases. This is actually a low compensation, every one I've heard of before was 7 figures.

It doesn't sound like much, but that is a pretty handsome figure to go back to life with. I don't think compensatory money like that should be taxed. Why add insult to injury? It's not like he earned the money the traditional way...

Lottery winnings are taxed.

you dont win the lottery by spending x amount of years in jail for a crime you didnt commit

Yeah. Well winning the lottery isn't traditional. Neither is inheriting money. Or the millions of other ways to obtain cash that aren't "traditional" but are still taxed.

Yeah, but this is compensatory money. Are funds from disability payments taxable? (This isn't a rhetorical question. I've never been on disability, so I really don't know.) I'd put this in the same sort of category.

Social security benefits are taxed. Retirement pay is taxed. But I believe the latter is taxed on a state level instead of federal. My stepdad refuses to live in a state that taxes his retirement.

I don't think that amount is worth 21 years of anyone's life and if the childs death was an accident he should have recieved more.

50 million is a little high maybe, 1.2 million would have been reasonable.

DAM !! 20 years to get almost a million dollars ....No math needed ! He is luck to at least been given something back but if some grany can get burnt with coffie and get 2 mill .,besides 700 K ist going to last long ,hell have to spend more than half of that just to bring his life back to par depending on what life he's got left ..hell 20 years he's missed out on alot that he can never be part of ..infact poor bastards probly old enough to need medical now that hes out of jail and that alone will wipe out his earnings with but one heart problem...
