Do you know any unusual/interesting definitions of intelligence?

I've heard that it's an "ability of communication without gesticulation".
The second cunning definition is that intelligence is so complex, that "it is something that we measure using IQ-tests".

An online dictionary defines intelligence as:

Intelligence:

The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge.
*To broad, because if that were true, machines would be intelligent. Which is not true*

The faculty of thought and reason.
*Better definition, because to reason, means that we can make choices. Choices we make based on many factors. Factors we choose to make decisions on by usage of independent thought.*

Superior powers of mind.
*Ambiguous, and without clear definition.*

yeah, that communication bit seemed to be more about 'Wit'...

that thing we think we have but which is actually about to be taken from us.

i heard that they no longer consider IQ tests to be valid indicators of intelligence since the tests generally apply to 3 or 4 fields of intelligence, whereas there are as many as like 9 fields.........

I shall pick up a Webster's NewWorld Dictionary book and find the meaning of intelligence.

Intelligence- The abbility to learn or understand. The abbility to cope with a new situation. News or information. Thoughs engaged in gathering secret information.

this is true, for awhile people were confused by my daughter, she's obviously a smart and sometimes wickedly clever girl, yet her i q test put her below retardation...she's obviously anything but retarded...when we had her tested the neurologist explained the reason it was like that is they only focus on certain aspects fo intelligence, and she had deficiencies in them...i'll wait for the report and then be able to explain it more...but they used more thorough testing and discovered that she was actually of normal iq, it was just...focused on different areas...and a little above normal for her ability to assimilate visual cues...

basically she'd learn more if she was being taught in sign language and a computer rather than traditional education...that's how her mind is wired...but she's smart enough to try to take a book to take to the library when she can't find hers...she knew she needed a book to get a book, but is unable to understand more than that *shrugs* she's always been fascinating.

i think intelligence is being able to use the full realm of your brain in a constructive manner...

I got into an argument with someone on irc one night - it lasted about 2 hours - over the definition of intelligence. I maintained that it's not only what you know, but the ability to obtain the "know" from resources. You are born with certain instincts. That is undeniable. But you have to learn virtually everything else. You learn from what? Resources. Your parents, books, peers, society, television, etc. Unintelligent people, stupid if you will, to me are the ones that either don't have the capacity to learn, or just don't want to.

Intelligence is the way we interpret our thoughts based on knowledge that we have acquired.

I've always seen it as the ability to associate ideas and objects in order to solve complex or rare problems in adition to the ability to learn new associations. Basically, intelligence is the ability to learn and apply knowledge.

Why do you have a picture of chaos as your av? Chaos is weak.

I don't think so. All thoughts can be interpreted in different ways.. so how would you measure the degree of one's intelligence? By the amount of interpretation required? That's why I maintain that a capacity to learn and the willingness to learn defines intelligence.

Tell that to a monk on retreat. What of contemplation?

I think the highest form of Intelligence would be the capacity to react positively to any and all stimuli you are exposed to without having any recognizibly aware intelligence. That is to say, you have instinctual patterns and natural patterns that are so advanced that you don't need a brain at all to survive.

Just my thought.
