Neither Democrats nor Republicans are the voting majority, as there is a sizeable minority of voters who are centrists, who can be swayed to one side or the other by circumstances.
Mobilizing one's base, and swaying the swing votes, is the key to the election.
(In response in pre-emption to JLB: the right is not the voting majority, or Al Gore wouldn't have won the general election by 500,000 votes).
