The best philosophy book in some time... - 02-20-03

I posted this in the Lit section, but I got some great responses so I figured I'd post it here. The philosophy is so real and humanistic, that I've finished it and am re-reading it with a highlighter. The tale in itself is facinating and a great vehicle for the wisdom it conveys. This is the synopsis of the book:

The battle between good and evil began long ago. Before history, God and Satan fought for the dominion of heaven. And God was triumphant. We all know the story. The tale has been told for thousands of years.
But it's all a lie.

For millennia, we have heard the tale of Satan's expulsion from heaven, of his defeat at the hands of the Lord God. But what if that's not the way it happened?

A manuscript has been uncovered, written over a century ago by a priest who was visited by the Devil himself. A priest who left the church to seek out Three Mad Prophets and learn the truth.

It is a tale that begins in another universe, before creation, and ends with a chilling prophesy.

You will finally learn the truth about the origin of God, his journey to our universe, and the battle for heaven. You will discover why God manipulated the flesh of our race, the logic behind his commandments...and why one being dared to try and stop him.

Here is the true story of Satan and God...

...and it's like nothing you've been told.

Here's the link for those interested. Let me know if you read it:

true story... bah... humbug. Satanism isnt about some horned fallen... satanism is about rejecting convention and realizing the truth that one cares primarily for himself.

that would be to suggest god and the devil are actual physical beigns...not constructs of a christian society...i don't think they exist as the bible says they do...but i do believe that there are entities that oppose eachother either pro or anti humanity...

Who cares what satanism is about? I don't expect a novel to tote a party line for either God or Satan. I expect freah insight. Anthropomorhism is an excellent medium to get such ideas across. I remember getting into an argument because I liked The Craft. Some other younger way-too-serious-for lifers jumped on me because the protrayal in the movie was not what 'witches' really were like. Well, ya know, Mr. Ed wasn't really a talking horse. Still liked it. As for Satanism being the ultimate expression of 'Ethical Egoism', I think that philosophy, as justification for any action, has been proven many times over as being nonsensical for explaining individual action. Now if someone wants to use it as an excuse, that's another story...Sounds like you'd be better off reading Ayn Rand...

what was that, a slam on philosophers and philosophy? i myself found the story somewhat interesting as one who loves stories, and i like good and evil, but prefer it on humanity's level; as for philosophy of god and evil, the story seems interesting as well......it is just another philosophy justifying a theory about god, but as a philosopher i tend to focus more on what i can perceive as reality and start from there

Yes, I've recommended it to everyone, and all who've read love it and have referred it to others. Like Jonathan Livingston Seagul, the medium to transmit the story is only important in that it conveys the message. Granted, it needs to be entertaining, but the message is important. I find it interesting that comments have been made by those who know nothing of the content. Isn't that what we always complain about? That our beliefs, our works, our literature are pre-judged without knowledge? Are we no better than the masses: the christian inquisitors, the modern-day book burners, the abortion doctor shooter? Ihave to say, apparently not. Luckily, the internet allows up to find many of like mind, whether they are inthis forum or not. Too bad that pendants are every where...

Hookah, you'll be happy you did. You don't know it yet, but you owe me one All I want in payment is to know what you thought of it. Everyone who's read it wwas amazed by it.

XxDaRkDeSiReSxX: thanks for the tip. I had read Nigel Calder's Enstien's Universe a whiel abck and it was a chore. This seems like an easier way to get the concepts. Thanks.

It really does sound like an interesting premise to a book, though. But I wouldn't say that it has anything from a philosophy point of view...maybe I'd think different if I actually read it, but as it stands, no.

If you want something thought-provoking, read "Ishmael", by Daniel Quinn. There are two sequels, "The Story of B" and "My Ishmael." Very much worth it.

It does cover philosophical concepts...
and Errantrogue. I didn't know you "owned" the forum. For some reason I thought my buddy Garg owned it...Even so.. that doesn't give you the right to treat me that way. All I did was suggest a book. But you know what? Don't worry about it.. I won't come back. It was a mistake coming back. If you would have given me a chance, I would have explained the concepts discussed in the book. Whatever.

The Apocrypha is interesting, it is also thought provoking, as it uses genetics, tachyon theory, and religious myth to explain certain biblical lapses. There is also a section called the Book of Philosophies which I have been quoting from a lot. I think you would feel differently once you read it, but I can't speak to that.

XxDaRkDeSiReSxX: at first I, too, was kind of put off by errantrogue. After reading some of his posts, I realized that his humor is highly sarcastic, but it is ratehr amusing once you're used to it. Plus, I've read some of his posts elsewhere on the board, he has some very good insights. He's an acquired taste, but jus a big ol puddytat once you get used to him
