Wow. I can't believe no one's started a thread about this whole immigration issue. Here's what we've got. 1 bill wanting to felonize illegal immigration. 1 bill wanting to grant citizenship to illegals already in the country via a lengthy process of back taxes, English tutoring, employment, etc, in addition to a work program that would allow Mexicans to come over here for employment purposes, with certain restrictions. The former has incited protests and walk-outs, mostly in the southwest and on the west coast, where Hispanic populations are most concentrated.

I'm all for felonizing illegal immigration, for future transgressors. And I also support some kind of system for handling the ones already here. It's not feasible to deport them all, though I'd love to round every single one of them up and send them back to Mexico. Now I've heard the argument "but America was founded on immigration and the principle of freedom". That's all fine and dandy. No one's disputing that. But you just can't decide to move to a country without going through proper channels. I've researched obtaining work visas and citizenship in the UK, and it's not easy. The system is in place as a deterrent so we're not overrun with immigrants that our economy and social system can't support. It's called illegal immigration for a reason. I don't walk through town with a joint hanging out of my mouth using the excuse that America was founded on freedom, so I can do whatever I want.

So on to the topic at hand. Apparently some schools are banning the wearing and possession of both US and Mexican flags while on school property in order to curb harrassment going on in the schools between whites and hispanics. I don't know how I feel about it. While I completely agree that safety comes first in schools, it seems so wrong to tell these kids they can't sport the flag of the country in which they live. But again, safety first.

i don't think it'll do anything to soothe flaring tempers...people don't need a flag to harrass others, it's just...despairing that this situation has come to the point where an american can't wear an american flag in america...because of mexicans from mexico, who don't like america, as america.

I just love watching news shows where people come on to talk about the issue, and you have people that refuse to call them illegal immigrants. They avoid using the word "illegal" as if by avoiding the word they legitimize they're crossing of the border.

Problem is, the system that's already in place doesn't help much. During harvest season the amount of illegals deported back across the border goes way down, then spikes up again once the season is over...helps to keep the price of fruits and veggies in the supermarkets nice and cheap if the growers can use illegals to keep their overhead down.

Then you've got the President of Mexico actually encouraging his people to jump the border and funnel American dollars into their economy to give it a jump start. Nice.

I like mexicans. I've found they're much easier to get along with than white people.
