good place to move?

curious as to why your looking to move to ALaska

I've heard they pay you yearly to live there... some type of pipeline distribution fund or something. (And not all of alaska is the icy tundra we think of it as)

hmmm... lots of open space there, but sounds kinda cold and boring...

maybe to the largest alaskan city.

Well I know you must be considering moving because of politics right? Alaska voted for Bush this year plus there is the whole pipeline connection that >FD< mentioned, so I wouldn't.

Well, it all depends on what city you're consitering. I've been to Anchorage, Jeneau, Skagway, and Hains. They're all on the coast, and all pretty cool towns.

actually my mom lives up there and is quite happy, we're not so happy down here, and we're considering it, she lives near the base my sister is stationed at in fairbanks...she's asked us to move up there, and has offered to help...we're considering it deeply as it would be such a big move...it may be nice to get back to nature...i don't like florida anymore, the people suck!

if it was politically motivated, it would be canada, but i guess alaska is farther from the mainland, besides, if they allow mr. arnie to run for president, i'd want to vote for him!...

i absolutely fuckin' love alaska and plan to live there some day....

ok....now, i never been personally, but i know quite a bit about it....

first off, itz not as cold as you think, or rather the southern region isn't.....the alaskan islands stretch all the way down to almost Washington.....but the the annual summer tempature in the southern region is 90 degrees....it gets warm, but yes the winters are a bit fiesty......

if you happen to live in a region thatz not very populated, especially the tundra....the government will give you free land......but, itz not as sweet as a deal as it sounds, as there isn't really any electricity or nuttin'.....but then again, itz kool if you want someplace to retreat to or go hunting or whatever.....

also, their taxes are different....i'm not sure what it is really, but itz sumtin' like you don't have property tax or nuttin'....

alaska will be the first state to legalize marijuana.....score one for the stoners

but yes, most peeps in alaska, or who've gone to alaska, love it.....

picture alaska as an american state with the canadian attitude......

i plan on moving there someday.....i think you'll love it.......if you can just get over the 6 months of sunlight and darkness thing.....

I'd live in Alaska as well. I've talked to a few crab fishermen and I'm kind of interested in doing that. It'd be nice to work only a month or so out of the year and make more than I would in any 9-5 job. But then again, it all depends on how much crab you catch. It may be the most dangerous job in the world, but it's certainly the best paying.

I've heard good things about Fairbanks. I plan on driving back up there in a few years. I could use another Alaska vacation.

but yeah, hope to god you don't sink or go overboard.....i was watching on TLC a show about crab fisherman.....and the film crew went on this boat, and sure as shit, they caught a rookie fisherman going overboard in the middle of the night during a storm......he was in the water for about 2 minutes........

they said afterward, that he was so goddamn lucky......like 99% of the time, if you go over, your done for.........but, just being in the water for those two minutes, he was so fucked up from the cold and whatnot he couldn't work for a day or so.....he just had to lay in warm blankets....

If you fall in the water out there in winter, you have less than 2 minutes to live. It's so cold that it drops your body temature so fast that your heart basically stops.

But, suprisingly for the hundreds of boats that are out there, they only lose about 1-2 people per-season. It's a very hard job, and almost everyone only does it once for the money.

I probably should have mentioned that I know next to nothing about Alaska . . .

i'd be willing to do it.....but itz hard ass fuckin' work.......what is it, most peeps work anywhere from 20 hrs to 30 hrs straight? in the cold.....and danger....

i also heard that most peeps die not from bein' thrown overboard, but from gettin' crushed by the crab cages....'cuz they weigh like 800lbs or sum shit....and in the rough ocean waters, they can fall and slide and yeah.....danger.....

but mad fuckin' cash.....i've thought about doin' it myself just for the experience

I did read something about crab fishing in stormy Alaskan waters though. Crazy shit.

Yeah, the pots weigh over 500 lbs each, with probably a couple hundred feet of rope off the end, better hope your foot doesn't get snagged or you're going over and under.

The guys I talked to said they worked about 18 hour days. It really is non-stop work too, it takes about a day to unload the pots, and a day to pick them up. If you've seen the show about it you've seen how many pots there are. At least 50 of them. Hard work, but hell, it's money. I'd do it, and eventually I might if I get the chance.

The thing about small citys is that there's always job openings so it's not like you won't find a job.
