Earlier, a loud explosion was heard at the theatre. The rebels said it was caused by a grenade thrown into an empty room.

Earlier, the hostage-takers' leader, Movsar Barayev, said they were a Chechen "suicide" unit demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya.

Witnesses who either escaped or were freed by the rebels described seeing men and women with explosives strapped to their bodies and wielding assault rifles.

The attackers' leader, a nephew of the late Chechen warlord Arbi Barayev, said he and his "mujahideen" gunmen and 20 Chechen women were "suicide attackers" who had come to Moscow "not to survive, but to die".

"Nobody will get out of here alive and they will die along with us if any attempt is made to storm the building," Movsar Barayev told Kavkaz-Centre by telephone.

The "smertniki" (suicide fighters) are demanding an end to the war in Chechnya that has been raging on and off for eight years. They have warned President Vladimir Putin to pull troops out of the breakaway republic if he wants to save the lives of the hostages.

Roads to Moscow blocked as Putin tightens security

Reacting to the crisis, President Putin has said he believes the hostage taking was planned by terrorist groups abroad. Following late night talks with the Interior Minister and federal security service, the FSB, an emergency command centre has been set up close to the Theatre. Putin has cancelled an official trip to Germany and Portugal to deal with the situation. Washington and London have offered any help necessary.

The effects of the attack are being felt far outside Moscow. In St Petersberg, Sochi, Vladivostok, right across the country, security forces have been put on alert. Police have been sent to secure airports, train stations, schools and nuclear power plants. All roads leading into the capital have been blocked. Commuters are being asked to present ID before they are allowed access to the city centre.

i think the last thing we need is Another Islamic state in the world with Sharia laws soon to follow. then maybe they will want to start expelling russians and such to make thier religious paradise(hell?) Actually situation in Chechnya is very similar to what happened in Afghanistan - terrorists who have taken over the country (well, part of it in this case) and are trying to build an islamic extremists outpost there. Fighting for freedom is just what terrorists there are saying to cover their actions there and make the rest of the world think that Russia is wrong. Chechen civilians are not really the ones who are behind that all and not the ones who want that kind of freedom.

When russians tried to maintain control there at first, the world started crying out loud about how "russians are killing people there" and all that stuff. Russians were forced to pull off their forces and leave the region alone mostly because of that. Terrorists took over. So what happened? After a year, two civilian buildings blown off in Moscow and some more in other cities and attack on Dagestan (the republic boardering Chechnya, and islamic as well). Terrorists thought they will be supported there(because of Dagestan being islamic too), but, surprise-surprise, people there considered it as an attack and helped to fight back against them, so the attack failed. Russians were fed up with all this and moved their military forces in there again, but the world was still crying about russians opressing poor chechens... Russians said then that the terrorists there are linked to a gloval terrorist group known as Al-Qaida and to the man Bin Laden and that they are a threat to the whole world, but who would listen to russians then? Nobody trusted them, nobody listened and didn't really want to. Russians didn't care about it this time and continued with cleaning terrorists from Chechnya, whatever the world was saying. What have they seen there when they returned? Cities in ruins, people starving, not a single school working, children who don't know how to read or write, but allready know how to use AK-47.

And then, BOOM!, September 11th happened. World is in shock, lots of people dead, and of course Al-Qaida is behind it. Only then the world started to see the problem. Well, at least USA did, as they were the target this time.

And, please, don't tell me about that bullshit about Chechens fighting for freedom. Civilians there don't want it. They actually welcomed russians there when they returned as they were fed up with what terrorists turned they country into. So, no need to mix civilians with terrorists.

And about that woman that allready got killed. Looks like it happened during initial capture. That woman was actually a girl about 20 years old and was shot. Oh, I am pretty sure she is the one responsible for all the problems in Chechnya...

So they didnt want to be independant after the October `91 election or the `97 one?It was a coup?I assume some forces there must act indepenadtly of each other but it doesnt seem to be just cause for a war on this level.Extreme sorts of actions to take on both sides I wouldnt trust either of them after that.:p

I am well aware of the sites like that. Everybody here knows of it. Nobody denied their existence, but that doesn't make it true. Internet nowadays is such a place, where you can post anything you want there without too much effort. Freedom of speech, ain't it? Give me some money and I'll make a site describing how brits have a tradition of eating cats for breakfast. Terrorists are not idiots and use those possibilities. 'Informational warfare' is what it's called. And people are easy to fall for that. Lots of people in Europe in USA are still used to russians being some kind of enemy and some terrible people, lol.

Of course you can tell me the same about me being fed with propaganda. And of course there is plenty of it, here, in Europe, USA, anywhere. If you want to know what IS actually happening you need to either be there youself, talk to real people from there or be intelligent and willing enough to set apart grains of truth from the mass of information and propaganda that media provides. People here learned on their experience that media does not always tell the full truth (years of soviet propaganda will do that to you too...). I can tell that I actually talked to a few people from Chechnya (real ones, not on the net), to a russian soldier who had to go through it. Can you say the same to back you up?

actually im sure you already knew that it was the islamic nations around israel that tried to invade Israel and failed miserably and thus lost even more land. No wonder the Jews wanted a buffer zone.. who could blame them given thier neihbors.

thos pics can be from anywhere. how do you know they arent from the strife in kosovo back a few years ago when they were wiping the albanians out? the same shit happend... and did that site have a link to an "Islamic Awareness" page? i didnt check it out but that alone sounds biased.
