One of the soldiers identified the man as a suicide bomber and fired toward him, but the bomber was able to detonate the explosives before he was shot, according to the police chief.

"They called on him and approached him," police commander Rami Sonnenfeld told Israeli Radio. "As they were trying to overpower him, the terrorist blew up... Soldiers were among the casualties."

Witnesses told Israeli radio that the gunshots may have detonated the explosives.

Firefighters put out a major blaze at the petrol station, which happened near the settlement's entrance. Authorities were uncertain whether the blast or gunfire caused the fire.

Ariel, home to 20,000 people, is between Nablus and Haifa in the West Bank.

Last Monday, two teenage suicide bombers slammed an explosives-laden car into an Israeli bus in northern Israel, killing 14 people.

Israeli forces entered the West Bank city of Jenin on Friday saying they were searching for militants responsible for suicide bombings.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades has carried out numerous attacks against military targets and civilians in Israel and in Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. In March 2002, the U.S. State Department designated it as a foreign terrorist organization.

So here we go again...Isreal just seized Jenin, I believe, in response to the attack on that bus. What now? One side pushes, the other pushes back. Can this ever end peacefully?

They need a wall 30ft high, with razor wire ontop, a 300ft minefeild either side and no I REAPEAT no access points to cross.

Tha'll stop them both, devided and it feels so good, no more trouble.

I was actually being sarcastic, seeing as how the World's reaction everytime Israelis get killed is to say they should give in to Palestinian demands.

What's funny is asking those same people if they supported the Confederacy in the Civil War. It's fun to toy with peoples' minds.

Not really look at psycological testing they did on russian soldiers during the cold war, one guy snapped and killed the psycologist with a chair before guards could restrain him.

And look at the americans that gy who the army tested in the 60s and went mad and they had to commit him for life.

Toying with peoples minds is dangerous but can be fun, like the hamster in a revolving maze.

Take a look at a map of the region, you can see that the Jordan river is the natural border.

Time to finish what was started in 1967 and push the Arab population out of the West Bank and over on to the East bank of the Jordan river
