I'm enjoying the latest version of Ubuntu a lot. Even though I use Linux almost all the time at work for all sorts of system administration work, I wasn't using it for my home computers. Desktop home use was too much of a pain for me because of all the driver issues and manual settings. Fortunately, Ubuntu 7.04 has done a way with most of these issues and I am seriously considering moving away permanently from Vista.

The final straw came when Vista asked me FOUR times whether or not I was sure that I wanted to delete a folder from my C:\Program Files folder.

1 ) Are you sure you want to delete?
me: yes
2 ) All the files and folders inside it will be deleted. Are you sure?
me: Yes.
3 ) You will need to provide permission to delete this. Continue?
me: YES!
4 ) *screen goes dark*. Windows needs your permission. Delete this file or not?
me: IWEIIGSEIG23G0328G@#g@#(g@#(HGSEI9

So I grabbed the fastest Ubuntu torrent that I could find and within an hour I am sitting here typing this up. It feels like heaven with out MS nagging me about everything. The best thing is that it comes with a lot of restricted drivers that were giving me trouble earlier. So graphics, sound, wireless everything pretty much worked out of the box.

I'm also loving the Beryl/Compviz desktop manager. Vista can't even compare. I'll post some more details later once I poke around this some more!

but yes i agree, beryl is sweet. i'm using sabayon linux (there's a thread about that here) with beryl.

it runs Live on CD as well as being able to install it to your hdd.

though i must say, the GRUB installation didnt work so i'm going to have to set that up myself.

no problem though.


oh and for anyone wondering, it is possible to dual boot vista with linux. and xp. in fact, my friend has 2 versions of linux, xp and vista quad booted on his laptop.

it can be done.

Oh, yeah, I've had dual boot Win/Linux for years. Though, lately, I've been using my Mac (running on the Darwin Unix Kernal) more and more. I'm not too proficient with Unix command lines, but I'm learning, and it's great fun.

hmm, I wonder if I should update my Ubuntu to the newest one, or if it is easy to do without having to reload the OS.

anyone familiar w/ SuSe?

im downloading Ubuntu right now for my laptop. (which is expendible) if i get it working good and it blows XP away i will keep it for good.

someone explain what beryl is though?

from what I understand, its the graphic portion of your window manager... its what you see.

beryl is an additional program for that controls the GUI and graphics drivers.

kinda like windows' Desktop X.
