Basically I want to be able to perform malicious actions on MY OWN network, in order to better protect it.

so basically I want a hack-pack...sniffer, brute-cracker, ssh tunnel, etc.

i really don't think that's the kind of thing to talk about here. that's just inviting trouble.

hey - there are legitimate uses for that kind of software.

thats like saying we cant talk about guns because some of them have been used to kill people.

there is nothing wrong with what he is wanting to do if it is his own network that he is trying to protect and it won't cause any problems. I have used mostly Linux programs for a lot of the testing like that. nessus is really good once you figure it out and play around with it. the biggest thing really is just to test your firewall and make sure that everything is closed on it. If everything is closed and your router or firewall is properly set up you should be pretty secure. The only other option I ever think of is to find someone you know who is a cracker and ask him/her to attack your network and see what he can get into
