| Is HD-DVD dead now? -
02-16-08
in an article from todays NY Times... Quote:
Because movie and entertainment technology has become integrated into a range of consumer electronics, the high-definition movie format war has created unusually wide-ranging alliances. The battle included, for example, video game companies; Microsoft has backed the HD DVD standard and sold a compatible player to accompany its Xbox 360 video game console.
Sony has pushed vigorously for the Blu-ray standard, not just because it is a patent holder of the technology, but also because it has integrated the standard into PlayStation 3. Sony has argued that consumers will gravitate to the PlayStation 3 because of the high-definition movie player.

Would appear so... I would just stick to regular DVD You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

But are they going to keep making regular DVDs?
Hell, I've lived through BETA, VHS, and normal DVD already..
not to mention, albums, 8 track, cassette, and Cd's..
I'm tired of having to pay mega bucks for new systems.. Or waiting with my old stuff till the prices finally drop. Beware the ex's.. They ARE out to get you... They are still making regular DVD's.. I think they will be until there is a final concensus of what the next generation format is going to be. Neither has lived up to what they have promised, with bad conversions or just poor quality. Yes there are a lot of good conversions and good qualtiy, but there is no clear winner here and well to be honest till both formats are fixed I don't think regular DVD's are going anywhere.
I have also lived through 8 track-tape-cd-mp3, vhs & beta-dvd-next gen...so your not the only one thats getting ick of it. You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

Yeah .. HD DVD has officially lost the battle. However, they are fighting back by lowering the cost of the machines (now $149 at Future Shop) compared to Blu-Rays $500 units.
Even though Blu-Ray has won this battle, I would not go out and buy one as I dont think they will be around in a year from now either. As Crypt said, stick with regular DVD because in the end, it will be the true winner.
There are too many costs, and too many problems with blu-ray for it to be successful. Just research Samungs latest court battles and you will know why.

I didn't read the article posted here, but I read an article yesterday saying WalMart now backs Blu-Ray, too. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I still have reel to reel tapes. Had to build a machine to listen to them though. I have "beatles - magical mystery tour" on reel to reel with original box. It may actually be worth something. They're now in mp3 format.
I have some great 78's. Frankie Laine, Bing Crosby etc etc. Putting them to mp3 wasn't easy when the player only goes 33 or 45. I had to figure out conversion ratio and all sorts of weird shit.
My first car had an 8-track. With diana ross stuck in it on fucking repeat. Boy did that thing die real quick. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. it looks like Toshiba is going to be pulling out of the HD-DVD market, and many are saying that Blu-Ray is going to be the standard You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

I think the safe bet is on regular DVDs for at least the next ten years. Hell Blockbuster barely took VHS off their shelves 2 years ago and that has been dead for at least a dozen years To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. Don't forget living through Laserdisc
Still Big in Japan. (pun intended) Quote: |

| Whoever wrote this is a complete dickhead. "not just because"... what the fuck? do you really think they'd put something ELSE into their ps3? they put it in there BECAUSE they own the patent! fuckwit.
I don't like sony. but then again, i haven't bought either player. I could buy a HD-DVD for cheap, but I won't.
whoever said that it is all over has jumped to conclusions. WAL-MART isn't every store around the globe. it isn't "won" or whatever until there are no more HD-DVD drives or discs being manufactured.
wal-mart may have spoken, but has the Porn industry spoken yet? from what i heard, HD-DVD is alot cheaper for makers... and alot of porn companies have bought it for that reason. apparently, porn made vhs over betamax.
i still think it's way too early. then again, thats what analysists and journalists get paid to do. make speculations. so sure, they're gonna make em as soon as possible.
I agree with Dy. after all, High Definition Optical Media is only worth buying if you have a High Definition Television.
SD DVD works on even your granny's old telly. Digital may be becoming a global standard, but HD isn't. SD DVD and SD TV channels will be around for alot longer.

oh yeah .. and Wal-Mart is on crack. If they think they can sell a crappy philips blu-ray player for $1000 when you can buy sony and samsung for half, they are only going to help KILL the format!
