You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

it doesn't take a miracle to get a MCSE... I have run into a number of people that had their MCSE and didn't know crap. Was even better when the former IT manager here got his, and started to think he knew Linux, Unix and BSD because of it. He ended up setting up an in house email server running windows 98 and said it was better then any 'nix based server I could build. Since then I have built a qmail server that runs much better the the 98 one he built. I have it set up as our email server, it is our in house web testing client, it runs as our in house proxy server and I had thought of using it for our web content controller You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Yeah, sadly that seems to be a trend. I've seen a lot of IT managers who don't know much.

I've been passed over in interviews because I don't have my MCSE but then had to come in as a consultant to fix the damage done by the paperMCSE that they chose.
SLC is full of "schools" that teach how to take the test, but don't give the knowledge to earn that cert.
There is even a high school in Salt Lake that will graduate kids with an MCSE. Pain is Nature's way of saying "At least your still alive!"

I am currently looking into getting my A++, Network and Security certifications and then looking into whether it would be worth while getting my Unix, Linux and BSD certifications instead of getting a Microsoft certification. Though after all that I suppose I could go back and look into getting a Microsoft certification, I just can't see it happening. Where I work now, I am the system admin for a Windows based network, but yet all I seem to do is fix windows issues or build stuff on one of my two FreeBSD servers that I built. I don't have to support the windows 200, or 2003 server, nor do I have access to our router. Though I will soon be looking into running another internet connection into the dealership so I don't have to worry about spending half a day to fix a 5 minute issue You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

That's awesome I, too, am thinking of testing for certifications. MCSE doesn't seem to have much industry respect, in my opinion, because a lot of people just memorize answers from past exams and end up getting great results.

The worst part of all the courses and such is paying for them. It seems all the places I look at up here, they require you to take the courses and then you have the exam to pass which is included in the price. In all honesty so far I like Redhats certification, thought I can't stand using Redgat or Fedora linux. From what I have read the exam is practical and not theory. You have to install a desktop, install server...have them both up and running with the required software in the alloted period of time. The final part of the exam is they give you a system with problem. You have to figure out the problem and the solution again in an alloted amount of time. There is no right or wrong answer to any of them, as long as they all come out the desired result. have 1 full functioning desktop, 1 full functioning server and a fixed machine at the end of it all to be certified. So far it is the only I have heard of that you need to prove your abilities instead of regurgitating theory. Seems like a much better way of doing it. Oh and the last thing I like about all this certification, is the bloody price. Fuck man, having a job like the guy who created Arch Linux would be great. Get paid to support servers, get paid to work on your distro, have the company cover half your web expenses and go to school for computer science. what the fuck am I doing wrong????????? You can look at it as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of human life, or just chalk it up to my being a sick, bloodthirsty monster. Either way, it's all the same.

Granite High School. The student ponies up $700 during their junior year and when the graduate, they are MCSE with 6 months OJT to accompany it.
Of course, this is the school that ran a fiberoptic backbone and the person installing it stapled it to the walls and, on several occasions, around a 90 degree corner. Pain is Nature's way of saying "At least your still alive!"
