Chatroom on the internet? Or on IRC? If it's IRC you'll fiund it's a very difficult process, and you'd better have a thick skin. Find yourself an MIRC client, and go lurk on a few channels. Once you've done that, go to one of the oldest channels, and ask them how running a site affects their day to day life. They won't be offended by the question because many of them will be in need of serious conversation, and will be glad to explain. Use that as a way to have them explain how they become site ops on IRC servers.

Or you could host an IRC server yourself at home (DSL or Cable recommended) it's fairly easy. Ask yourself why you want to do this first of all, because it's no picnic.

Try running a forum first, because a chatroom is MUCH harder, and is real time. You can walk away from a forum. Not so a chatroom. Not a successful one anyway.

Protocol.

Oh! Almost forgot. Get a VERY good firewall. One that uses stateful packet inspection. Sygate is very good.

Don't download any files at any time, from anyone.

Check for Spyware. Get an antivirus client. Don't run JAVA or Active X. Make sure you don't visit any sites that you get sent to. Applets are dangerous too.

I have a chat on one server and another on another - and a forum of my own... it's a bitch - but chat ops are fun, yet a lot of responsibility... Beauty would be good at it though

Yeah, it's quite hard to run a chatroom .. specially when there's always those very few that likes to ruin the whole chat experience. but hey, if you know a few tricks and you have at least a decent script and a firewall, you are on the way to go. and if anything, you can always create your own channel and get the grip of how things goes as an operator.

I've opped a chatroom for the last 10 years, havent had any problems with it, I was a server admin for 2 years, and it wasn't a big deal either. You guys take yourselves a bit too seriously.
