So hey, have a case of writer's block? Need to get the words flowing again? This might be a place for you to start, and who know what it could lead to. I participated in this myself once, and wrote a poem called 'my old vengeance", that poem was published, and I was even paid for it! (only $2, but hey. )

Here's the deal: Once each week I will post a title, and you take that title and write your poem in your style. The only rules, You have to have the title for that week, and keep it 20 lines or less. They'll be a lot easier for us to read, enjoy, critique, and offer ideas on.

So, add your own poem, comment on others, and enjoy.

Title for week 1: "A Light at Dawn"

A light at dawn means nothing
When the oppressiveness of the night is upon us now
Midnight is the inbetween
Indiscisive.
Not sure if it is ready to let the day end and begin anew
Like me
Unsure
Not fitting in to yesterday or today
Not positive of tomorrow
A light at dawn means a new start
A new chance
But when you are stuck in the midnight of life
Dawn feels like it may never come.

hmm I like this idea fd, here is a poem to start it off, it's short and I don't know, seems like it is too short or maybe too long, not sure, but I am trying to type with one hand in a caste and it hurts, so I will leave it to everyone to comment upon.

A light at dawn

My mind reaches, grasps toward the shimmer in the lake
I cant feel my face because of the wretched cold
The cold that holds me, cradles me like a child
Then crushes me like an insect in the wind and rain at dawn.

My face freezes into one position of anger and pain
I cant see my reflection any more...am I blind?
Am I dead, am I transparent like a ghost might be?
I shake my arms into the lake and see only a light inside.

A light that brightens up the entire lake and blinds me....almost
I jump back startled by what seems to be hundreds of thorns
My eyes in my head ache from the sharpness....no wait...
They are not thorns in my eyes, its the light at dawn.

Thanks firewall, I like your poem as well. Though the last 2 lines don't seem to really fit with the rest of the poem. They seem forced somehow.

Good stuff WL... the only thing I can suggest is make use of punctuation... it's your freind. That's about it though, good piece.

Besides the couple weird punctuation issues, I really like this one. It does seem a bit wordy though... You should take it to the editing room, it would be interesting to see how it came out of there. Anyway, I really like the feeling and objective here. Great work.

[a light at dawn.]

Pitched up against a rock, it's too early
for my senses. The heat is relentless
and so I sit here starring out over the city.

A cigarette barely clinging to my lips
I search my pockets effortlessly for a light.
Noticing them down below
flickering as if taunting me,
wishing someone cared.

Lighting my smoke I inhale deeply
and thank the dawn as the smoke waifs around me.

Only now can I sit and ponder life.

hehe punctuation I almost never use, don't know why though. i like your poem too, thou it does seem like it was cut off a bit short. you could easily add a few more lines on to it and it still would be great.

Title for week 2: "Saturday Night at the Pub."

I always looked forward to Saturday nights,
We would dress up in happy clothes and meet down the road,
My heart beat fast when I thought of Saturday nights,
So many smiles and stories waiting to be told.

I always felt such enjoyment on Saturday nights,
The pub would be packed full and drink would quickly flow,
My friends would laugh and throw around sarcastic remarks,
I loves Saturday nights those years ago.

Now my Saturday nights are full and heavy,
I sit and fiddle with the television control,
I miss those long exciting Saturdays at the pub,
Now I spent the night sat bored and alone.

I remeber the final Saturday night I went to the pub,
The smoke filled my lungs as I walked in the door,
My friends sat grouped up, grasping at their chests,
There were gunmen in the pub, they werent there before.

I hadn't left the house once since I got home from the pub,
My weekend excitement and giddiness had died,
I wish so much for those days to return to me,
But Saturday night at the pub was now just inside.

I like this one Firewall, but I think you could cut down on some of the words and still keep the general feeling. Maybe post it in the editing room, see what they can come up with?

FYI: this challenge is now going to take place every 2 weeks to give people extra time to join in. If it picks up a bit we can go back to every week.

My body is crying
from an ache I can not define
as I pray for it to cease.


I listen to the lies lying.
No longer sure of anything mine,
I beg for release.


I do not wish to be this way.
No one courts this pain.
A smile is like a treasure hid.


I wait and wait for the day .
Pushing past zero onto insane,
as I find fault in everything I did .

sorry to here that, the poem it self isn't bad though. It sounds a bit rushed near the end, almost like it isn't completely finished, but I like anyways.
