What To Submit: 2 copies of MS, SASE #10 envelope for notification, SASE postcard for receipt
Length Limit: See above
Submission Format: The poet must submit TWO COPIES of 10 sample pages of poetry in English on any theme. The final book manuscript length should not exceed 48 pages since, including translations, the published, bilingual book will be 96 pages in length. To give the translator time to complete the work, the entire winning manuscript will not be due for at least 6 months after selection of the winner.
The 10 sample pages of poems in English should be on white 8.5"x11" standard paper, clearly typed and photocopied and submitted in duplicate mss. (Single-spaced except between stanzas with no more than one poem to a page, though a poem may run on to more than one page.) Be sure to label all pages with titles of poems and number them from 1 to 10. The applicant's name should NOT appear on any poetry pages. Staple the 10 anonymous sample pages securely together and attach one cover page to the front of each of 2 duplicate mss. with name, address, telephone, email if applicable, of the author, plus a biographical note. The remainder of the ms. must be anonymous. Include an acknowledgements page.
If poems have already been translated into modern Italian, submission of a bilingual sample is encouraged making a 20-page sample with a translation page following each English page. Include name and biographical note of translator on the 2 cover pages. Rules are detailed. Please read them carefully at: http://www.italianamericanwriters.com/prize.html
Submissions Per Entrant: One Submission Per Entrant
Unpublished Submission: Individual poems may have appeared in magazines, anthologies or chapbooks
Exclusive Submission: No
Suggestions: This contest seeks the best manuscripts of poetry in English by an American poet of Italian descent, to be translated upon selection by the judges into quality translations of modern Italian, for the benefit of American poets of Italian ancestry and the preservation of the Italian language. Quality poetry in any style is sought. Universal themes are welcome.
Daniela Gioseffi writes, "We are not looking for poems having to do with the Italian-American experience so much as just looking for excellent poetry. Read plenty of contemporary American poetry and be well schooled in good poetry before attempting to write and submit. We publish a very professional quality of poetry." | |

PCI Editor's Comments: One of Britain's top poetry organizations.
Suggestions: General advice to contestants: "Read as much poetry as you can."
Jean Sprackland, judge of the Foyle Young Poets Award 2002, has her own tip for anyone wanting to enter: "There is no formula to writing a winning poem," but what 'struck' Sprackland while judging the competition was the "importance of looking closely, rigorously, curiously and with a fresh eye. Really looking is a habit we have to relearn. It is much easier to recycle well-worn images; snuggle back into clichι."
Previous Foyle winners have gone on to be published by Carcanet Press and established poetry journals, and their work has graced London's tube trains as part of Young Poets on the Underground.
Foyles is a famous bookshop in London. Read about it at: http://www.foyles.co.uk/foyles/index.asp

Suggestions: Funding for this prize is provided by Barilla America, Inc. to demonstrate its support of poetry in the US.
The following background info on the genesis of the contest comes from: http://www.midlandauthors.com/newsletter/1_2004.html
"Ron Offen, poet and publisher of the Glenview-based poetry magazine, Free Lunch, took umbrage when he saw an ad in the Ravinia concert program implying that poetry is inferior to the visual arts for representing tangible things and to music for the intangible.
"He threatened, tongue-in-cheek, to organize poets to picket the headquarters of the ad's sponsor, Barilla America, Inc., the Bannockburn (Ill.) producer of pasta and other Italian food products. The parent company is based in Italy.
"The upshot is that Barilla America, Inc. will fund a poetry prize of $200 for a poem to be published in Free Lunch. The winning poem must be related to Italian cuisine.
"Sergio Pereira, Barilla vice-president of marketing, said, 'I love poetry, and Italy loves poets and poetry. It's the land of Virgil and Dante!'"

Unpublished Submission: Yes
Exclusive Submission: No
PCI Editor's Comments: This contest appears new for 2004. Prizes are good for a free contest. Website also mentions a Young Writers' Contest - query for more info.
Suggestions: Contest organizers say:
"'In The Beginning Was the Word' is a literary arts contest, open to all
writers, founded on two basic premises:
1. the primary way to the Spirit is not through doctrine, but through experience; and
2. poetry and creative prose possess the greatest capabilities, not only of reporting such "numinous encounters," but
of re-creating and mediating them.
By their talents, poets and authors of creative prose can broaden people's awareness into the very omnipresence of the Spirit, and into the 'recognition that existence is charged with a mysterious other.' (James M. Wall)
We welcome submissions from all writers and poets whose gifts may broaden our own awareness. Entrants need not meet any doctrinal or church membership requirements."
Guidelines For Submission:
"What we seek in poetry/prose submitted to "In The Beginning Was the Word" are pieces that engage/illumine/explore some question animating the human spiritual quest. Many questions fall into that category, such as:
What is the relation of humanity to God, the universe, life?
How/Where does one touch Hope, Love, Grace, and Meaning, in today's world?
What is the Good, the True, the Right?
What is the secret to the fullness of life?
What is the purpose of human existence?
In addressing any of these questions, authors and poets can take a variety of approaches:
To some, the key to 'spiritual Truth' may lie in a belief common to a major organized religion; whereas to others, it may lie in more personal insight.
Some essays, short stories, or poems may explicitly assert how Powers Unseen are at work under the surface of their narratives; others may merely invite readers into ambiguous territory where they are prompted to ask their own
religious questions, and come to their own conclusions.
In presenting his/her vision of the spiritual, a writer should feel free to offer an interpretation that is either traditional or unorthodox; judging will simply be done on the authentic spiritual insight evident in the piece, as well as upon its literary excellence."
Contest Judge: From all submissions, a select committee from the Lake Oswego United Church of Christ shall engage in a "blind judging" process to choose first, second, and third place winners.
