My point was that society creates a group dynamic that encourages a "Me verses them." mentality, which my friend has (or had) fallen into. For society at large to rake him though the coals did nothing (Which you seem to be advocating). Nor did having his parents let him get to this point by coddling him (Which they did). The only thing that has been able to make him start to change is having someone in his life willing to be completely honest with him and who he does not see as an adversary. Only individual people willing to work on an intimate basis have the potential to change the negative behaviors of an individual. Does that make anymore sense?
