Fuck phonetic. The English way rules! The Oxford dictionary is like a bible to me. You think america has alot of annoying slang, you should hear Australian. We have a dictionary of slang that's the size of War and Peace.
Words i hate: all baby-words, and baby-talk. And Australian slang like "Brekky" "Stolly" "Bob's your uncle" "Crikey (aka "Crikey moses")" "Rippa" "Sick (aka "sick shit" ie: good.)" Oh man, there are hundreds more i don't want to think about.
I like British and Scottish slang. "Joe baxby" that's cool.

Um, that isn't a correction, I was talking about letters you pronounce differently, not conventional letters, hence why I said arguably, there is no phonetic difference between 'c' and 'k' for example. In fact the first step towards phoenetics would probably be to drop the letter 'c' since its pretty much useless and can be replaced with an 's' or a 'k' depending on the word.

I don't particularly buy the phoenetic alphabet since words pronunciations in the dictionary follow Queens English, which some people don't regard as correct, spellings, yes, the best spoken form, nope.

MISCELLANEOUS FACT: the Oxford Englsih Dictionary was the idea of a professor long ago; he placed an ad in the paper for anyone who would submit words with terms that actually "define" said word........for 10 yrs he collaborated with an individual who is the largest contributor to the dictionary and words as we know it......this individual was an insane individual who was spending the rest of his life in an asylum under the conviction of multiple murders.................

Australian slang can be grating but it's not nearly as bad as ebonics, ghetto-speak or "blinglish" (i kid you not, it is a term. [black english = blinglish]). And at least australian slang is clever:
- Bag of fruit (suit)
- Dog and bone (telephone)
- Trouble and strife (wife)
The only real complaint I have with it is the tendency to change words by putting -y, or -ie on the end [stolichnya/stollly, barbecue/barbie] as it can be quite frustrating having a conversation with someone who insists on talking like that.

Now i know that most of this was taken from or adapted from British english and I'm not for a moment disputing that. What I am saying is that using rhyming slang and clever slang is a billion times better than the (popular) American slang which consists of abbreviations ['ho], and words that don't make sense [homie, shizzle]. I know that this style of slang has been adopted from African-Americans by MTV and music companies as a way of identifying with disaffected, white, middle-class, suburban teenagers (why the hell do they identify with Snoop?) but it's still crap, no matter where it came from.

If you're going to use slang then use imaginative slang, not just crass shite.

there's really only one word that seriously irks me, and that's 'juxtaposition'... just typing it makes my left nut twitch, and not in a kinky way. anyone that has ever used that word in a conversation needs to be bludgeoned by big fucking rocks.

hmm...I hate the word particularly..cause its in one of my lines for the play we're doing..and i can't say it right...its like..my speech impediment or something..i'm doomed to feel like a total retard when i say particularly...even though i can say Stratosphere with no problem at all!

'juxtaposition' is a cool word because even the way it sounds when pronounced sort of gives you the impression of things being juxtaposed. 'obfuscation' is cool in that way too.
