but i also speak of "irregular" words that a child can't read by just applying rules that they learn in school (like an "e" at the end of a word changes the vowel from a relaxed vowel to a tense vowel, or when you have two vowels in a word, the first vowel makes the sound)
if you tried to say "through" using these rules it'll come out "throw." or "throwg." irregular spellings like these are left over from 18th century english. just like the plural of "ox" is "oxen." the rule was the add an "en" onto the end of words to make them plural.
I for one am happy that's not the rule anymore

"through" and "thorough" are just cheating at scrabble.
I hate "should of", but then that's two words.
Netspeakers should be shot, frankly. Perhaps it's acceptable to abbeviate some words in IRC. Its acceptable for SMS messaging since you have a limited field width. For forms of communication without those resrictions it just makes you look like a moron. Thanks. Find out exactly what to think, next.

it just wont happen | Its also important to keep the redundency which makes the English language so useful.
Plus words do have history and roots, phonetics would destory that and make it harder to identify where words come from. This may seem countered to ease of spelling and use, but it is valid history and history should be preserved because it still bears relevance. Thanks. Find out exactly what to think, next.

It's actually impossible to talk fully phonetically by the way, since the (arguably) 24 letters of the alphabet with different pronounciations don't cover the sounds we make, like "heer" in the last post for example, there is no letter for the "ee" sound, saying "e" twice isn't the same. Thanks. Find out exactly what to think, next.

Definitely... I hate this word because I always spell it wrong. In fact, I only remember the correct spelling now because of someone here.
Properly... hate it. I think this has more 'traumatic childhood roots' though.
Thilthy... though not technically a word, please see explanation for 'properly'. Don't Drink and Park. Accidents cause people. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I hate the pronunciation of superfluous as "superfullous" - it sounds like someone vomitting.

As I expected, this thread has become 95% whining . Pussies.
I like referring to things I don't like as "gay," because let's face it.... gay people are all wrong. However, my friend Marc and I have decided to take the burden off homosexual men, so now when we don't like something, we call it "lesbo," i.e. "man, that show's totally lesbo." Spread the word.
What I see here is a disapproval of the evolution of language. I can't tell you how many words I've read that were popular 300-500 years ago that I think are COMPLETELY lesbo. "Spake" instead of "spoke," for instance. I hate it. Completely freakin' normal at the time, though. Before the English language was really solidified, nobody cared how you spelled a word, so long as they knew what it was. So, you run across the same word spelled like 25 different ways in the same time period. If they read our stuff, they'd wet their knickers.
Personally, I don't care what you like, because chances are, nobody's gonna like what we like 300 years from now. I do admit, however, that I don't like much Ebonics / thug-speak. Though it may be a cultural varible or whatever, I just call it mass laziness / lack of edumacation / overexposure to Snoop Dogg.

I am sorry to say this (antihero) but the English language has never solidified and I don't think it ever will.
As there are always new words coming around and being put into it and people from other country's bring their own version of English with them.
Or this is the case for England, I have no idea about the US. Quote: |

What's Egypt got to do with it?
Yes their language isn't solidified as well but then again no country has a solidified language.
As the English language ever growing with new words (Not shortened words) hence not solidified.
With so much of the English language being used in other countrys now days, they have to change it some way shape or form. Quote: |

It may be impossible to talk phonetically using only the 2 6conventional letters of the english language.
Fortunately, scholars realised this long ago and created a 'phonetic' alphabet comprised of symbols, each one representing a different sound created by certain letter combinations.
If you look in a dictionary, each word will have brackets after it with weird symbols strung together by hyphes. This is the phonetic pronunciation of the word. Unfortunately I don't think Microsoft word has phonetic symbols in it.
