Logic and Truth

Finally - a point about logic and truth.

The idea of logic is truth preservation. What that means is that if you start with true beliefs, your reasoning will not lead you to false conclusions.

But logic does not generate true beliefs. There's no easy way to do that.

Most people use the evidence of their senses to generate true beliefs. They see that apples grow on trees, that some bananas are yellow, and so on.

For many other truths, we must rely on faith. That God exists, that right is better than wrong, that truth is a virtue: these are beliefs which cannot be confirmed by the senses, and reflect therefore a certain world view.

When it comes to conflicts between such basic precepts, logic fails. It is not possible to show that one world view is right and the other is wrong. If a person believes in God, for example, logic is unlikely to change that person's mind, for that belief is ultimately based on faith.

And remember - most people have non-logical reasons for believing the things they do. They may have political opinions because their parents had them, they may have on-the-job views because they're afraid of being fired, they may think a movie is good because all their friends do.

These too count as parts of a person's world view. There is no reason for you to hold these beliefs, because you are not subject to the same non-logical factors. But you should be aware that mere reason will not be enough to get them to change their minds.

So use reason with caution, and if you really want to persuade someone of something, remember that compassion, honesty and tact are as important as logic.

I've actually seen that before...such as with my family.
Everyone before me were racists who refuted the label racist, even though they were blatently so.

I have...attempted to break from that since I realize racism is illogical, or perhaps even idiotic in most cases..

Nah, people keep changing subjects and you have one idiont go with it and the debate is lost unless a mod comes in and puts it back on path, witch is rare.
but the other reasons are pretty good as well.

Agreement in no way accounts for equality...... logical thought will always recognize the ability to be wrong..... if someone considers themselves right all of the time they are in fact being illogical......

I never said you were..... though your irritating way of percieving disagreement as wrongful fact does tend to evince feelings of unkind temperment..... disagreement does not always mean the disagreeing party is most certainly wrong...... there is more than one single side to all topics and one opinion does not a fact make.....

One of the largest causes of the death of a debate upon a thread topic is feeding the Troll.... when you willingly feed the troll it is not our fault you end up in its belly... and it makes it much harder to to assimilate who did what as the truth is distorted by the fact that you are now part of the problem.... IE--- if you are in the trolls belly you are now part of the troll

So.... if members would remember not to feed the troll and report trollish activities or blatant insults when they occur and await patiently Moderator intervention it would make it much easier on us to differentiate between the Troll and its victims as well as make it blatantly obvious that this activity was being committed....

At times, however, other members' truths are as convincing as yours. That Rumsfeld video, for example. You really can't argue with it. Finding a counter-argument - which you did - is also perfectly fine, but stating that the initial argument is invalid or wrong because you have found an EQUALLY potent counter-argument is not logical. Obviously posting more than one example after I had posted one doesn't make you more right, since I only intended to post one, but it does show that you have a point. I believe that, in that case, both sides had different truths that were in fact akin to one annother.

I'd have to agree with Dyshade on this one. You can scream, yell, sing, talk reasonably until you are blue in the face but you are not going to do anything but frustrate yourself, and poke the troll. Be done with it already, starve the troll.

I didn't say you didn't admit Rumsfeld made a gaffe. I'm saying that you claimed to nullify the argument with argument of your own, and it doesn't really work that way. Where's the hypocrisy in showing a video and claiming not to like it? I didn't mention a word about Kerry or anyone being able to do any better.
