No "medium" deserves to be made fun of in the opinions of people in said medium. You're one of them, so if you didn't stand up for it, you'd be even weirder than you are now. From the viewpoint of someone who is not an anime fan, the whole anima fanboy culture is ridiculous. A lot of those people actually strive to BE anime, and it's scary. I know a few of them.

I like anime. not because its japanese but because of the art the story and the animation and the styles.

My favourites at the moment are Hellsing and GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)

i do like the depth and the way things are told. i particularly like stuff like Spirited Away and others by Studio Ghibli, and i love Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. True Cloud looks way too androgynous but still...the graphics and effects are awesome. i'm not a complete anime freak, and i do know some. i would never dress up like that and i dont collect figurines and shit. though i do collect and read my way through tokyopop books and am starting to read through the great fight series. i do not like pokemon or any of that shit.

I love Japan, and I likes me some anime, but I'm far from obsessed. There's two that I actually watch. My interest in Japan lies more in the history though. So, I'm obviously not going to be all "YOU DON'T LIKE ANIME!? YOU SUCK! BAKA..*random insults picked up from Naruto*" because that'd be idiotic and well..there's plenty of anime that sucks hardcore.

Those cosplayers suck. If for some reason I felt the need to dress like an anime character, I would make sure I had the most badass costume ever. Naruto headband not included.

Buuuut..overall I'd have to say:

Japanese history(Samurai and such) > Anime
