Oriental means everywhere east of the bosphorous (looking from europe) so maybe the problem comes from it not being specific enough, like calling a Scotish person British, some really don't like that as they view it as an incorrect description.

I still get confused in this country as here, Asian is taken to denote Indian or Pakistani only.

Oriental rugs are not actually very asian anymore, and besides i didnt say when you called rugs oriental i said when you call asian people and cultural stuff oriental. the word Spic wasnt a racist term at one point either, nor was WOP, guini, or terrier.

Asian in the US means anyone from asia, india, or pakistan. oriental, is a hateful term here because its outdated, and brings to light what the brits used to call the Chinese after they conquored them. nigger is believed to have been a NON racial slur as well in origin, but the way it was used through slavery made it one. Oriental is no differnt.. in the US at least.
