Personally I think anyone who is offended by a racial slur is pretty stupid if they don't realise just how stupid the person making the comment is.

When we call someone Oriental, Asian, Honky, Nigga, Spic and all the other names we give for groups, it's usually based upon what we see and what we assume, and we all know the old saying...

I have lots work collegues who are of different ethnic groups and different sexual groups and beliefs but I don't go around saying 'Hi Asian male' or 'Hullo gay woman' I just say 'Hi Ken...' and 'Hullo Jane...' my first thoughts are not about there outward appearence or their anything they may do between the sheets, but simply that here is someone I'd like to talk to. Maybe if people stopped putting labels on others AND themselves then maybe there would be a lot less shit.

I really couldn't give a fuck where a person comes from, lives, gender, religous beliefs, personal issues... (and so on)

People are people and I will decide what I think of a person by their actions and nothing else.

now if the word was created around ancient roman times, i think that colonies where a little far off in the future dipshit. europeans where getting goods from the orient long before colonial times and as rogue i believe said, the term oriental switched from pakistan further east to china/japan.

The heavy trading with Asia didnt begin until LONG after the ROmans. LONG after. The word NIGGER also meant something else at one point, as did the word WOP, as did the word Faggot. But it changed over time (as words do) and began to mean something differnt. Words have literal meanings and implied meanings, just like the word Latino refers to Hispanics in the USA, however the word literally means people of a Latin culture which means "italians, Southern French, Spaniards, Greeks, and American Latinos. THe wrd SPIC was originally a police term used to describe a Latin male, actualy an Italian or Hispanic male commiting a crime. Over time it became a nasty racial slur, why wouldnt oriental be any differnt? man, get your head together.

i said the word came about in those times and i also gave you the bases of the word and why the asians dislike it. so i'll try to explain this again. the word orient means east of in latin, thus meaning east of europe. asians didn't like it because it meant europe was the "center" for trading and made them somewhat inferior. now, if this originated in the colonies, asia would have been considered west, not east. thus it would have been labeled occidental, not oriental.
i also told you my asian friends where from college. they were called exchange students and i believe you said yourself, mainlanders don't have a problem with it. so that could have been the reason i never heard of it.and i hit that washington state link and it provided no real info except not to use the word. thats is why i said get a real link, not that it was restricted there. i did say that over new england but mainly just giving you a hard time. it is so easy to get your panties in a wad.

Ummm, well, actually, many asian people do not even know what "oriental" means... they are just very used to be called "asian".
And i dont think the word "oriental" is a racist word, in fact it sounds very artisitic, i actually think the word "asian" is less appropriate...
