It depends on your location as to how much money you need.
Currently you could easily live in the area I live in for less than 30,000 a year for just a one person family.
In fact, the average costs overall per year would be somewhere around 15,000 in terms of renting and bills and such.

My sister gets 30kish a year and she's living comfortably. I met one person in this area who acquired 100k a year and his life was extremely comfortable, with big screen tvs and fancy dinners and such.
