NAACP leaders stunned by remarks of prominent comedian



In the presence of NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and other African-American leaders, comedian Bill Cosby took aim at blacks who don't take responsibility for their economic status, blame police for incarcerations and teach their kids poor speaking habits.

Cosby made his remarks at a Constitution Hall event in Washington Monday night commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision that paved the way for integrated schools, reported Richard Leiby in his Reliable Source column for the Washington Post.

Leiby said Cosby's remarks were met with "astonishment, laughter and applause."

When Cosby finally concluded, Leiby said, Mfume, Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking "stone-faced."

Shaw told the crowd most people on welfare are not African American. He insisted many of the problems his organization addresses among blacks are not self-inflicted.

Cosby said, according to Leiby: "Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids – $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'

He added: "They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. ... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"

The Post said Cosby also targeted imprisoned blacks.

"These are not political criminals," he said. "These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"

There is some validity to his concerns over language, but that's a far cry from the Cosby I remember hosting videos about civil rights from the 60s that they still show at universities...

He's got a good point though and it's not just a race issue.

It's not just a US bugbear. The UK has jsut the same problem.

Parents aren't taking responsiblitiy for their children. The welfare state is churning out more and more moths who can't be bothered to feed themselves and haven't been cultured to work for a living.

If I suggested enforced sterilization of anyone who didn't pass a certain pre-requisite accademic standard (I.E. a perosn who is employable) I'd be branded evil, yet it's perfectly fine for these breeding machines to flood the welfare system with their parasitic progeny.

and I agree that the welfare problem isn't specifically racial. There are more whites on welfare, but a higher percentage of blacks are on welfare. I say cut it off for all of them.

Or better yet were at war over oil and a 20 year old car gets the same gas mileage as a new car ,when we have had the technology to eliminate gasoline from cars for over 30 years or at least like some new cars get a hell of a lot more than 20 miles per gallon ..

That being said, while, as I've heard others say, stealing poundcake is a bad example (any cop that shoots a kid for taking a snack from the 7-11 should be put in jail themself), the general gist of what Cosby was saying is correct. As I suspect these comments were not pre-planned, I won't nitpick the specific words he used too much, but he's right that whining instead of trying to solve problems is a big reason that black America is still in pretty much the same situation it was twenty to thirty years ago, if not a worse position. Although I think over the last five to six years it's gotten slightly better.

But why should I feed them. I and many thousends of other hard working people, work hard, pay their taxes and relay on their own earnings. Now I know unemployment and genuine incapacity are factors, but the simple fact is that there may by whatever percentage unemployed, but how many of these COULD work or are living of the system because they can?

Its a real life Ant and Grasshopper situation but the grasshoppers just get fater because the ants are compelled by the welfare state to support them. I say it's time we feed these parastic grasshoppers to the winter.

As I have said before many people are on welfare for genuine reasons, but I know this isn't the case for a large number of them. Our Defendant Personal Injury department is cluttered with this rubbish. this money for nothing, I'm sueing your for triviallity just so I can get a cash injection into my life.

The majority of them have weak claims, they are long term unemployed and their medical reports usually show minimal incapacitating injury (if any)

SImply put, there is a sub-culture of ignorant, rude, ill-educated aprasties who do nothing all day but have oversized broods for which society must feed and cloth. These degenerates don't even raise their children, they let them be raised by TV and social services. They see School as child-minding and don't see why they should have to look after their own kids.

Why shouldn't we put them into a large vat and boil them down for fertilizer? That way we can recoup some of the losses they have caused us in the short term and see the state recouperate long term.

Why should a pensioner have to wait 18 months for an operation due to funding shortages when an infestation of loafers lives free on the state?

Cosby Has Harsh Words for Black Community

CHICAGO (AP) - Bill Cosby went off on another tirade against the black community Thursday, telling a room full of activists that too many black men are beating their wives while their children run around not knowing how to read or write.

Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them. He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."

"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference.

"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."

He also had harsh words for black men who don't have jobs and are angry about their lives.

"You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an opportunity."

In his remarks in May at a commemoration of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, Cosby denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners."

"I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said then. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."

Cosby elaborated Thursday on his previous comments in a talk interrupted several times by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates.

"For me there is a time ... when we have to turn the mirror around," he said. "Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in."

Cosby lamented that the racial slurs once used by those who lynched blacks are now a favorite expression of black children. And he blamed parents.

"When you put on a record and that record is yelling n----- and you've got your little 6-year-old, 7-year-old sitting in the back seat of the car, those children hear that," he said.
