Any nation commiting itself towards the unification of the world under one government will be considered a hostile state commiting an act of war. On the other hand I don't think it has the slightest intention of ever being so. I'm sure that some people there think it would be a good idea, but most people there don't, and it isn't set up in such a way as to make that possible without the consent of individual countries.

I don't think the UN has any intent on becoming a world government...however it is most definitely a useful forum for getting things done for the good of everyone.

But yeah, all I see here is the same sort of fanaticism that goes with the Islamic terrorists. Its so interesting how God seems to be on everyone's side, no? It'd be pretty arrogant for anyone to assume that God is indeed behind them, given that everyone thinks that God is behind them...the US, the terrorists, the Iraqi militias, the French...etcetera...

The UN as a whole isn't worth the U that it carries (there's nothing united about them nations). Granted, if ever a world government is formed the UN would probably be the best organisation to set it up considering it is a global political organisation... But at present the world is simply too divided... Humanity is still thinking in terms of nations, and people. Once that thinking switches to being an earthling, a member of the human species... Then it may happen that a globally oriented government is formed, without the risk of that govt preferring certain areas when it comes to distributing resources.

I think the internet will accellerate this process... I'd give it 3 generations in the western world... 5 to 7 in the 2nd and 3rd world countries. If an alien species decides on first public contact... Then the need for such a global governing body will create it in a single generation... At the risk of it being a corrupt organisation (since the way of thinking of the people on it is still in terms of nations).
