LONDON (Reuters) - Opponents of the death penalty around the world criticized the United States on Friday after double murderer Kenneth Lee Boyd became the 1,000th prisoner executed there since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.
"This is one small step for humankind -- backwards," said veteran American campaigner Clive Stafford Smith.
"The death penalty makes us all far more barbaric. I have watched a lot of people die, and when you come out from watching someone being executed it certainly isn't a better world," he told Reuters in London.
I hate this shit. They did the same thing when the military death count in Iraq reached 1000 and 2000.
No matter what your opinion is on the death penalty, what difference does the big round number make? Who was number 999? We didn't hear anything about him, and we won't hear about number 1001. Are they less special?
The two thousandth man to die in Iraq died after laying in a hospital for a week, while the media was morbidly anticipating the 2000 mile marker. The minute it was announced, the entire U.S. Senate rushed to the floor to pontificate about it. I suppose number 1999 wasn't special enough to get a speech.
I agree completely with this post. I have a feeling that myself, and Synikul's opinions on the death penalty differ greatly, but commemorating the big numbers seems like a giant insult to all the others.
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in southeastern Baghdad on Saturday, the U.S. military said in a statement, becoming the 2,999th member of the U.S. military to die in Iraq since the invasion of 2003.
The soldier was also the 110th to die so far in December, the deadliest month for the U.S. forces in more than two years.
Amid rising U.S. casualties, President Bush is under pressure to present a timetable for the withdrawal of troops who his critics say are bogged down in Iraq.
Bush has spent much of the holiday period consulting his closest aides and has promised to announce a new direction in Iraq early in the new year.
The U.S. statement said the soldier, whose name was withheld, was killed when a roadside bomb hit his patrol in the southeast of the capital. Two more soldiers were wounded.
Hundreds of Iraqis are killed every week in sectarian violence which is threatening to pitch Iraq into full-scale civil war.
A toll of 3,000 U.S. dead is likely to be an emotive one for Americans but it is less than the number of Iraqi civilians killed in a typical single month in the latter part of 2006, according to the most recent statistics from the United Nations.
How about the 100th school rebuilt or power plant repaired? No matter one's position on the war, why isn't the media showing giving proportionate attention to the positive events involving our soldiers?
Because positives don't appeal to the general public. They need news. They crave controversy. That's why when there's no real news to report they rely on speculation and the opinions of 80 year old retired generals who haven't seen combat since Korea.
How about the 100th school rebuilt or power plant repaired? No matter one's position on the war, why isn't the media showing giving proportionate attention to the positive events involving our soldiers?
Because the majority of our forces over there aren't rebuilding anything, they're just keeping things from devolving into complete chaos. Plus, most of the contractors don't want you to know that they're making big bucks off the rebuilding by sub-contracting the work to locals and then pocketing the lion's share of the profit while our men and women continue to die while they continue to make a buck.
