Migration fears to double BNP council seats - 03-18-07

Here's a little something to stir up our British, or soon to be British friends. I'm curious what they think about this.

Migration fears to double BNP council seats

THE British National party (BNP) is heading for record gains in the May local elections, reflecting high levels of concern among voters about immigration.

The anti-immigration party, which has 53 local councillors, is set to at least double its representation, according to Professor Michael Thrasher of Plymouth University’s Elections Centre.

“They are gaining real votes,” he said. “It does look as though people aren’t reticent about voting for them any more. Unlike in the past, it’s no longer one man and a dog.”

Searchlight, the anti-fascist organisation which is running a “Stop the BNP” campaign for the local elections, has warned that the party poses a threat in 93 separate wards in the UK.

Thrasher said that 93 potential gains may not be an overestimate given the BNP’s recent showing in council by-elections.

Phil Edwards, a BNP spokesman, said that the party did not have a target for seat gains in the local elections but attacked Searchlight’s “Stop the BNP” campaign as being undemocratic.

He also criticised David Cameron, the Tory leader, for bowing to political pressure in sacking Patrick Mercer, his homeland security spokesman, for alleged racist comments.

“Why is it that the Marxists at Searchlight have this influence over Conservative politicians?” he asked.

While the BNP has been gaining support at the expense of Labour, it is also picking up some support from the Tories.

The BNP has been successful in attracting white working-class voters, particularly in depressed former industrial areas. Its vote tends to be highest in areas adjacent to those with large ethnic minority populations.

In recent council polls held in wards in Nuneaton, Burnley and Calderdale, the BNP’s vote has been between 27% and 36%. The effect of a BNP candidate also appears to increase turnout, suggesting that the party is good at getting its vote out.

Jon Cruddas, the Labour deputy leadership candidate, has warned that Labour is playing into the hands of the BNP by failing to provide enough social housing for local people.

Trade unions are also concerned about the party’s rise. “The BNP has been trying to gain support in the mining areas around

the country because in our absence, with the rundown of the mines, they’ve tried to target these areas,” said Steve Kemp, general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers.

Last week Aslef, the rail union, lost a case in the European Court of Human Rights over its attempt to expel a member who had joined the BNP. Members of the party have recently set up a trade union, Solidarity, intended for party members who are not welcome in their existing unions.

“It’s a nationalist union but it is not a BNP union,” the party spokesman said. “There are a lot of ordinary working people who don’t like the way trade unions are being run.”

The other question I have is about the power of British labor unions. Are they actually allowed by law to dictate the political thoughts of their members?

They can try to influence their members' thinking - as every single political party does - and with free speech there's no law against saying to someone 'I think it would be a good idea if you voted this way', but again no different than any political party's propaganda *shrugs* It gets illegal if they pay or threaten them in order to get them to vote but as far as I know they're not alone there either. Strange how the second oldest profession in the world so strongly resembles the first.

I find the fact that BNP gets to have any seats at all hugely disturbing, but then there are a lot of bigoted idiots and well meaning but uninformed people out there to vote for them.

I can see where a lot of votes might come from people who are understandably and thoroughly fucked off with the immigration laws when our hard earned taxes are being spent on housing and maintaining people from other countries who just think they'll have it easy over here. In some cases that's true, but in a lot of others they are not allowed to work legally and so get used as slave labour, turned to prostitution and drugs by force, held under the brutal control of organised thugs from their own country etc., etc. so we are not always doing them a favour by letting them into the country in the first place. If they're escaping total absolute horror and persecution then I believe it behoves us to help and protect them however we can. If they just fancy a change of scenery and do not come here with the resources to finance it, why the hell should those of us that work our asses off support them in any way whatsoever when our money already supports the British freeloaders who refuse to work and con the welfare system into supporting them?

As much as generosity is a virtue, it is outrageous that we are bending over backwards to please the non-British influx and to be politically correct to the detriment of our own vulnerable people. If we could possibly accommodate them all happily I would say the more the merrier, but it’s hurting people who are native to this country and that is in direct opposition to the duty that our government has to us.

As frustrating as all of this is, there are other parties who try to effect change with regard to immigration law and the above are to my mind not good enough reasons to go as far as joining or voting for the BNP; you've got to be pretty bloody low on the intellectual and ethical food chain to consider it. If you want to be patriotic tattoo the Queen on your arse.

Unfortunately, the present government is such a laughable yet disturbingly evil farce that people are turning to things they might not have considered in the past in the simple hope that it will turn out to be the lesser of the two weevils.

I'd bet any amount of money that the thoughts you expressed are the first steps on the road to becoming a BNP voter.
