Libertarians are a diverse group of people with many philosophical starting points but they share a common belief. Everyone should be free to do as they choose, so long as they don't infringe upon the equal freedom of others.
It surprises me when people poo poo libertarianism, I mean don't people want to do sex, drugs, & rock v roll?
I like a lot of what the Libertarian Party stands for. Things like eliminating welfare and social security. However, I don't like the Libertarian idea of having wide open unregulated immigration.
I've often been described (by others) as a libertarian because as long as people are getting on with their lives & not disturbing anyone else getting on with theirs I really don't have a problem. Plus I believe the government doesn't have a right to tell me how to live my life or anyone else's. However I don't count myself as a libertarian because I believe in universal healthcare, public education & the belief there is need for a government.
The idea is sound, but the only trouble is that most of what we do does have an effect on people. Drugs do, for reasons of related crime, and even if it was legal then we might have mass weed-induced indolence to deal with. Sex does through disease. Rock and Roll does when I'm trying to get some sleep. I'm slightly playing devil's advocate here (I think weed should be legal), but I think that as things stand there are actually fairly few things that are illegal or regulated that are concerned only with personal choice.
'If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning, concerning matterof fact and existence? No. Commit it then to the flames: for it contains nothing but sophistry and illusion.'
'The heart of man is made to reconcile the most glaring contradictions.'

You are a liberal, not a libertarian. Libertarianism is about a lot more than legalizing drugs. That's actually a minor issue for them.
