"Montana has a long history of fighting the federal government over its requirements. For years, the state bucked federal rules on speed limits, drinking and driving, seat belt use, and motorcycle helmets. In those cases, however, their refusal usually meant less federal highway money.

This time, Montana residents could also face extra screening at airports, unless they have a passport to show as identification. U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., says he will be the first in line for the extra screening."


i must say, they sure do retain a cowboy quality when representing Montana. Generally i disagree with the national id plan, i have plans for getting my passport because it's now required for all out of state travel, including Canada(except by horseback) so is there such a need for a one number to fit them all or is the current state of identification with a passport, driver's liscence and credit card enough to prove that, i'm an American?

It has both pro's and con's.

I like the idea of a federal ID for voting. It would help eliminate all that voter fraud we have been seeing the past few elections.

Also, the idea of a standardization for driving priviledges would be great as well.

You don't need a passport for out of state travel unless you're crossing one of the national borders.


I'm for a national ID card, and I've never understood the paranoia of the people who are against it. We already have a national ID system, it's called Social Security, try to do anything without that number. We need a national photo ID to go with it so it could be used for security purposes which are a legitimate constitutional power of the gov't. A card like that, combined with simple enforcement of current immigration law would solve the illegal Mexican problem overnight.

i'm hoping to go see some of canada, ideally the coastal b.c. area, so i'll need one.




and look at what's happening to that system...

they'll never solve the illegal mexican problem; and when they're sending thousands of dollars in untaxed money to mexico through bank of america, some states are even wanting to give them a drivers license, they've become to integral to our society.

...as for the national id, i'm not to sure about it really, the only time it makes any news around here is when it's trying to be enforced. It's hell getting a local driver's license now, will a national card really make things any easier or really put a crimp in illegal immigration especially when so many politicians seem to pander to them?

Go to Google News, search "Arizona immigration", and take a look at what's happening there. Through state agencies, they're actually enforcing current federal immigration law on businesses who hire illegals, and take a wild guess what's happening.....the Mexicans are leaving the state! Some are going to other states, but some are going back to Mexico. If every state did that, they'd self deport. A National ID card would be a big help in this area.

I am all for a Social Security Photo Identification Card. It would prevent alot of cases of identity theft and illegals using your SS# to pretend they are legal and apply for credit and welfare on your dime
