WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's re-election team unveiled his first campaign advertisements on Wednesday and they in part use the events of Sept. 11, 2001, to focus on his "steady leadership" during turbulent times.
The Bush-Cheney '04 campaign waited to launch the ad campaign until after the Democrats chose their presumptive nominee, John Kerry, who locked it up with impressive victories across the country on Tuesday.
Campaign officials said they saw Kerry, a Massachusetts senator, as a formidable opponent and predicted Bush will be at most tied or behind in the polls until the Republican nominating convention in New York in September. Recent polls have put Bush behind his Democratic opponent.
"We're obviously starting this race in a place where we thought we would, which is even or slightly behind, and I think that's going to stay that way for the next five or six months," said Bush's campaign pollster, Matthew Dowd.
The four Bush ads, one of them in Spanish, will begin running on Thursday in at least 16 important battleground states and on more than five national cable television channels.
Two ads refer to the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, as the Bush campaign seeks to present Bush as a tried and tested leader who has risen to the challenge. One ad, entitled "Tested," shows, among other images, a damaged building from the World Trade Center ruins behind an American flag.
"The last few years have tested America in many ways," the voice-over says. "Some challenges we've seen before. And some were like no others. But America rose to the challenge."
It concludes: "President Bush. Steady leadership in times of change."
An ad called "Safer, Stronger," points to the problems the United States has faced since Bush took office in January 2001, a recession, a declining stock market, a dot.com boom gone bust and "a day of tragedy."
"Today, America is turning the corner. Rising to the challenge," the ad says. This one is also done in Spanish.

I hate to defend Bush, but ALL POLITICIANS target minorities, and he should bring up 9/11. If you liked the way he handled it, vote for him, if you didn't like the way he handled it, vote for someone else.

We watched some Reagan adverts in our history seminar today. They had us all in stitches. Green fields with flowers swaying in the breeze under a blue sky; granny with a smile on her face; the little blonde girl with the gap tooth; the black man at the garage cleaning someone's car etc.
If you get more of the same this time then it will at least be entertaining. 'If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning, concerning matterof fact and existence? No. Commit it then to the flames: for it contains nothing but sophistry and illusion.'

Kerry is on record against the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996, and has previously said he supports gay marriage.

Bush will run a positive campaign, but will only have to highlight Kerry's record to win easily.

If the election was decided on the number of insults thrown, I think the Republicans would win hands-down.

Then why did he vote against the Defense of Marriage Act, and back gay marriage in Massachuesetts?
He's trying to back track now, but he's got a long pro-gay record he can't hide from.

Gee, just two years ago Kerry teamed up with Barney Frank to argue for gay marriage in Massachuesetts......
Are you saying that Kerry was lying then, or is he lying now, Billy? Congressional Delegation united
in opposition to proposed constitutional amendment
discriminating on basis of sexual orientation
U.S. Congressmen Edward Markey and Barney Frank, on behalf of themselves, Senators Kennedy and Kerry, and Reps. Neal, McGovern, Olver, Meehan, Tierney, Delahunt, Capuano and Lynch, released a letter to every member of the Massachusetts State Legislature expressing opposition to the proposed State Constitutional amendment restricting legal recognition of same-sex relationships. The text of the letter, which was signed by all twelve members of the Congressional delegation and was delivered to the State House the morning of July 15, 2002, appears below:
July 12, 2002
Members of the Massachusetts Legislature
State House
Boston, Massachusetts 02133
Dear Legislative Colleague,
We rarely comment on issues that are wholly within the jurisdiction of the General Court, but there are occasions when matters pending before you are of such significance to all residents of the Commonwealth that we think it appropriate for us to express our opinion.
One such matter is the proposed Constitutional amendment that would prohibit or seriously inhibit any legal recognition whatsoever of same-sex relationships. We believe it would be a grave error for Massachusetts to enshrine in our Constitution a provision, which would have such a negative effect on so many of our fellow residents. We in Massachusetts are justly proud of our Constitution, one of the first documents on this continent to set forward a system of self-government, which has not only served us well, but has been a model for others. The proposal to add to that document -- essentially a charter of liberty and democracy -- a provision as harsh both in its intent and its effect on our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered constituents is in conflict with the generous spirit that motivated its adoption, and that should continue to govern us today.
In addition, as legislators, we believe it would be a terrible mistake to write into our Constitution so sweeping a proposal with the likelihood that it will prevent not only the state government, but also the cities, towns and counties from acting as they might wish to provide some form of recognition for same-sex relationships. We are therefore united in urging you to reject this Constitutional amendment and avoid stigmatizing so many of our fellow citizens who do not deserve to be treated in such a manner.

This election will be a slam dunk for Bush.
The liberals are upset about the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, but that is because they are embarrased about American power and wish for the UN to take over our foriegn policy.
But the liberals are going to get a rude awakening on november. Most Americans remember the 911 attacks and realize that the war will come here again if we don't fight it over there in the middle east.
I think the Democrats will lose New York and its electoral college because the New Yorkers were there on 911, they will not soon forget. A pacifist candidate like John Kerry will not be popular there, New Yorkers will vote for strong leadership.
Combine New York's electoral college votes with that of the "red states" and Bush will easily win.
I think there will be more Republicans in congress too. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Reading that letter I have a lot more respect for Kerry. The day that the US or any of its states begins to enshrine restrictive and discriminatory laws into its constitution will be a very sad one indeed. Why? Because you don't want the sort of people in your country that might stop discriminatory legislation getting enshrined in your constitution? Kerry is a bit of a chump, but at least he's done one thing right. He'd be better than some MPs I could think of. He has more "positions" that a stock broker. And they change by the week.
As to gay marriage, the reason that a lot of us resist it is simply because of the can of worms that it opens.
Under our constitution, if it is looked upon as "equal protection" AKA 14th amendment, then what are you gonna say to the Mormons, who want more than one wife? What are you gonna say to the mother who wants to marry her son so that he can get her social securety surviver benefits? Or to the screwball who wants to marry his cat? or his goat?
